'05 TL AM Transmission
I have 144k miles on my '05 TL automatic transmission. Tranny fluid overheated over weekend. Brought to my trusted mechanic and he said that the tranny has metal shavings coming off and it may be a matter of time before it fully goes. He called the dealership to speak about rebuilt tranny's and they said they do not provide them b/c of some defects. Mechanic suggested to me that I put up a fight with Acura and there is a good chance that they would replace the tranny for me if it is under 200k miles. I cannot find anything on Acurazine remotely close to this. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I don't think they will cover it over 100K without some sort of extended warranty. That said, it doesn't hurt to call and talk to them. Acura customer service is one of the reasons I came back to Acura.
Tell us about how often you change the fluids. What type of ATF is in the tranny? Have you ever changed the pressure switches? Metal shavings is never good, but maybe you can do some things to extend the life of it a bit.

Honestly, I know virtually nothing about cars. I have no clue what type of fluid is in the tranny nor have I changed it. I didn't realize that it needed to be changed annually or every 50k miles. I do not think I have changed the pressure switches.

How long have you owned the car?

Well....Get ready for some flaming.
Unfortunately I think it is toast. I would take it to Acura to have them check it and then start shopping for a used transmission. You're probably going to be out about $1500-$2000 for a trans and installation.
Before you do that here is what I recommend trying:
Sorry.

Before you do that here is what I recommend trying:
- Change the fluid ASAP. You have 7 years and 144K miles with a transmission containing a fluid that was replaced by Honda/Acura. I would do a series of 1x3 with either the new Honda DW1, Amsoil or Red Line fluids. If you do not know how to do it then get a shop to do it for you.
- Change the 3rd gear and 4th gear pressure switches.
Sorry.

If you overheat it and boil the fluid you will have transmission fluid coming out of the vent tube on top of the trans and fluid dripping everywhere.
If you've done nothing to it in 7 years, it might have just been low and you helped to burn it up by revving it to 6k in drive while stopped.
Throw some good fluid in it and drive it until it does this again. I wouldn't worry about it until it happens again. These transmissions always have metal on the drainplug and if yours has never been changed, you even have the break-in shavings on there.
