now on to my greatest kill that should've never happened...



i'm out cruisin' earlier tonight and heading home...i pull up to a red light to turn left and have a 2007 M5 in front of me...we turn left and the road opens up to 3 lanes...he hits the gas somewhat and passes multiple cars and i stay close behind him...

there's a traffic light up ahead with the current three lanes, but merges into one lane after you go through the light...the middle lane is wide open, so i speed up to get the front spot...as i'm approaching the light, the M5 slightly cuts me off to take my spot, so i move over into the third lane next to him...

i tell my wife that this car is gonna waste me...it costs this much, has this much power, but was curious to see how bad of a beating he'd give me...it was dark, but the driver appeared to be in his upper 40's, mid 50's...

light turns green...

he pulls out ahead of me by 1/2 car length (no surprise), but as i'm reaching 6000rpm and gaining on him, i see his car jerk, like he missed his shift or something...or he could have been taunting me...i shift into third and start pulling out in front of him and by the time i hit 4500rpm, i'm ahead of him and the lanes have merged into one...all the while he's right on my ass till he makes his turn into his neighborhood...but i couldn't believe it at first...i had just beat an M5 with a V10, 500hp...

okay, so there's no way in hell i could've beat him...so what happened? ...if he had been taunting me, he should have still beat me...right? ...if he didn't know how to drive it, he couldn't recover in time...

i really don't consider this a legitimate kill, but thought it was pretty funny and wanted to see what you all thought...

 

from the sound of things...it seems like he messed up his shift and just couldn't recover in time like you said. i'm sure if there was a longer stretch of road, he would've easily pulled ahead in no time. but go ahead and enjoy your win cus that's what racing is about isn't it? to see who the better driver is... and in this case, you were! so feel free to bask in the glory =)

 

lol you must be feeling very good now! I guess what you said is right - he was trying to taunt you, but he overestimated his driving skills/or underestimated the TL's performance and thought he would have more than enough time to beat you.

 

He most likely didn't shift properly....I remember when I had my BMW 545i I killed this yellow Corvette Z6, it was similar, he got initially this jump on me and shortly after I put 1cl on him but we had to stop because of the traffic. He later claimed he shifted to 4th gear instead 2nd which I believe to be true.

 

I guess the moral behind this story is that always do your best and avoid taunting your opponent...lol....

the M5 actually requires the driver to manually switch over to the 500hp setting using the idrive system otherwise its only 400 HP! LOL nevertheless a great car for a great deal of money as well

haha, may be he really thought no matter what, he would've kicked your @$$ - so he stayed in 400hp mode, he taunted you by jumping ahead of you then slowed down a bit, but then he never thought he would miss shift, then he got all nervous, and by the time he recovered, you barely passed him...man I am good at making up stories.....

 

beating an M5 feels damn good, but knowing it was because of stupidity/a mistake makes you just say ah well and move on...but a win is a win so chalk one up for TL...

 

i would have loved to see his face, but he turned before i could point and laugh at the next light...

ah yes, the iDrive system...i've heard of it, but didn't know how it worked...

yeah, throwing down over $80g's on a car and not knowing what the fuck you're doing with it must be a great feeling...

 

Back to those days when I had a 3G TL... I got smoked really bad,from a dig, by a Pontiac Grand Am and this happened because I forgot my VSA on....it was really emabarrasing.
So you never know....I am still a strong believer that only races that really should count are the ones at drag strip or race track. Street racing is very subjective and dangerous. There are too many variables at stake when it comes to street racing.
The fact that you won this was because M5 sucked really bad, maybe he's got his car a few days before and still getting used to it...who knows.
I wouldn't use the word 'I won'. More apropriate to this situation would be "I've got so lucky..." or something along this line...you know what I mean.
When I smoked that Corvette I didn't even post my 'luck' to bmw forum simply because I knew it didn't bring any value whatsoever to the world of racing.
I was merely a mishap rather than a race.
Just my 2 cents.

 

yes i totally agree the races that should only count are the ones on a drag strip or track...but like i've told others on here before -- you can't drive around and when someone wants to play tell them to meet you at the strip in half an hour...you have to go then and forget about it...besides, i'm not keeping a kill sheet or anything, so nothing matters to me except for what happens in those few seconds...

and yes, i used the phrase 'i won', but as i mentioned earlier, it shouldn't have happened and the M5 driver obviously didn't know what he was doing...and the only reason i posted this is because i found it pretty funny to 'have gotten so lucky'...i actually thought about not posting it just because i came out in front due to his mistake...and we all know that car would kick my ass any other day...

guess i shouldn't tell you about the 550i i beat a few months ago...same scenario as this (what is with guys who can't drive these high-powered bimmers)...search for it in 'racing & competition'...

 

......I was beaten by a 6G Civic EX (stock) while in my old 02 Maxima because I inadvertently launched from 2nd gear. I am certain the guy posted my 02 Maxima as a kill on some forum. (Ironically, I now own a 6G Civic EX--station car.)

Like you, I give VERY little credibility to the results of a street race. That said, I do not know of any TLs that run mid-12, trapping at 114mph....such as the one I saw at Etown two weeks ago.

The guy in the M5 had gas pedal not pressed at all. He was just coasting in neutral.


You are on AT, right? You should be competing with Lincoln Towncar.... or some Oldsmobile or '87 Buick. The 3rd gen TL Auto tranny'ss are 7 sec car...... You have to be extremely lucky to pull 6.3 sec in 0-60. The only way to do some service is to get 6MT. No exceptions.

Well, I meant in worse timing with the 3rd gen TL AT. I saw many instances where they've reached 6.7~ 6.8 sec with the Auto tranny. You have to have absolute best launch to get to 6.3 sec, with every best condition possible.

 

i say bump the haters and congrats!!! he prob forgot to push his "M" button which really opens up the engine: goes from 400hp to the full 500hp, improved throttle response, stiffer suspension, etc.

oh i also forgot ... the m5 has three different settings for the differential and two for the suspension in addition to the HP setting ... you have to manually set all of those for prime performance @___@ lol

 

i wouldn't mind having those gadgets in my car at all..just for the fun of it!

 

so there's probably at least six knobs in the M5 to turn on different things...

differential stage 2...engaged

suspension stage 1...engaged

idrive system...engaged

A guy a couple houses away from me has a new M5. I have a 3rd gen TL 6mt with intake and exhaust. I raced him down my street and he absolutely destroyed me. There is no possible way you beat him. He probably wasn't racing you. That car runs mid to low 12's in a quarter mile. I guarantee you there is no TL on this Forum that can hang with that car.

also, I think dirtyjohn's TL might be able to beat a M5, since he had already beaten a modded vette. Note that I said MIGHT, not WILL.

 

Lets face the facts you are full of shit. You need to ban yourself from this site. If he was really racing you, you would not have won. Even with the power button turned off he still would have beaten you, and there is almost no chance he made a mistake shifting because all you have to do is click a paddle to upshift. The car probably jerked because he hit the brakes. So really he wasn't racing you. A TL cannot beat an M5. There was no race, nobody beat anyone. Probably thought the m5 took off at the line and he was actually at 1/2 throttle. This was not a race, sorry It is a beautiful car though.

Probably the most BS i have ever seen.

1. Even at 400 HP mode, the M5 will kill TL off the line, through out the speed range.

2. 500 HP is available with push of one button.

How do I know? I have the 1st E60 M5 in the west coast.

M5 throttle under normal setting is a little tepid at dead stop launch. Depsite that, it will still cream stock TL off the line regardless it is in P400 or P500, or thorttle in Sport setting.

Depends on the setting of the M, I do have problem with dealing with a slightly modified EVO or STi in P400 and in dead stop launch.

But EVO tend and STi tends to run out of steam north of 100 due to the gearing, in which M5's top end gearing is too good to over come.

Unless his car died with massive SMG failure. YOU HAD NOT SHOT WHAT SO EVER.
