'04 TL AT Transmissions - help me decide what to do
What's been the general consensus on the reliability of 3G transmissions? I have an '04 AT TL with about 146k on the odo and it's been a very reliable car. My big concern even when I bought the car was the transmission issues Honda/Acura has had in the past. I originally wanted to push this car to 130-150k before thinking about getting a new car, but now I'm thinking about maybe going further, who knows. What I'm fearing is that the transmission will give out and have me paying whatever fortune it'll cost (probably $3000-$4000) to get it fixed when the car itself is only worth a couple grand more than that probably.
Help me make my decision - am I playing Russian roulette by keeping this thing longer or should I just say "it's gone 150k, time to move on"?
Help me decide....

Looks like you've already played that game and won. Who's to say how long the drivetrain will last, another 1K miles or another 100K miles, but with the proper care/maintenance they will last quite a while. Remember, even if the trans went and the cost was $2/3,000 to have the trans repaired, it's still a great deal less expensive than adding $20,000 or so to purchase another vehicle.

^^ Absolutely agree...the car owes you nothing. Keep it and use it until it doesn't run any more (unless you're really set on selling it). Replacing it will cost quite a bit, and obviously, you've taken good care of it to last as long as it has. Don't worry about something that likely won't occur if it hasn't already. I sold my 2000 TL to my brother and had concerns about the tranny (was a little hesitant to sell it to him because of the history of trans problems even though mine ran fine), but now it has ~ 130K miles on it and he loves the car.

I agree with turbonut...
2-3grand for a new tranny IF it breaks is alot less then 20g's for a newer car, even then 20 grand still puts you at buying a used TL with 30-40k miles on it. After the 5yr 60k miles warranty is up your right back to wondering when something will break. It doesnt matter if a car is new or old things find a way of breaking, your either lucky or your not.
If you got the coin to buy another ride with cash and still have money in the bank for emergencies then I would say get rid of it, but if your going back to financing i'd say keep it and bank more coin from not having a car payment.
