I dropped in behind a new E-55 AMG on the way home this evening, and we turned onto a back way into my neighborhood with no traffic. It starts out as a two-lane road, then splits into 4 lane and up a very steep grade. I held the car in 2nd, and gunned it when we hit the 4-lane and started around the guy. He knew what I was up to, and by the time I was at his back bumper he was fully into the throttle. Yes, he pulled away from me at a 5 mph clip I'd say.

I was impressed at how quickly his Benz picked up the pace when he floored it. We got up to about 60 and then I dropped to a coast and, going uphill, was back under 40 mph in a flash.

It was a fun little sprint, and I now know how fast one of those E-55's are. Heck yes, I knew I'd get my butt kicked, but I wanted to see his ride move it. Too bad he has to cough up $80k (MSRP) to own that speed.

The new one or the older one? The previous model had a 349hp V-8, the new one, what a 464hp V-8? The new E55 is one of the fastest accelerating cars period. ESPECIALLY at speed, as fast as any Ferrari or Lamborghini. The previous one was a sub 5 second car, the new one close to a flat 4 second car.

I've got to add in my 2 cents here because this thread really is silly. Two of my friends have E55 AMGs. It may be the fastest sports sedan in the world (and has 200 HP more than the TL). It's true that it doesn't come with satellite radio (yet), but is available with a number of other features that the TL does not have (i.e., front and rear parking assist, keyless ignition, etc.). It is, arguably, the finest (as well as the fastest) sports sedan in the world. Am I jealous? No, not one bit. The TL compares very nicely at a fraction of the price. In fact, when i was looking for a new car, one of my E55-driving friends told me to look at the TL because that was the car he would buy if he were buying a car anywhere near this price range.

The E55 AMG accelerates nose to nose with a Ferrari 360 Modena. It is the fastest car with 4 doors in the world. There is no "vs." here. Just you following an E55 and getting him to push his car a little.

In a straight line I know not to mess with an 04 E55, even in my "other" car...plus the other driver doesn't have the "option" of missing a shift. Properly launched they are a 11 second car. They are most vicious from a highway speed roll and are the king of straight line speed in a 4 door sedan, well until the new M5 launches, but I would still rather have a RS6 of the current super sedan lot. Might not be quicker in the straight but better in the twisties and much more exclusive, but heah some folks like the three pointed star.

E55 traction control does all the work for you -- just MASH THE PEDAL and the most advance RWD traction control puts you in the 12.5 quarter-mile times w/o you even thinking about it ... it's idiot proof.

There is a video out there of a stock E55 and a modified 2003 Cobra and the E55 drops it like it is standing still. They are crazy fast but look like a normal sedan.

The E55 AMG Benz is nothing compared to a Vector W8, or a McLaren F1 or a Bugatti 110, if we are talking about money not being a problem... The Benz is really ugly and outdated inside, looks nice only in the outside, very plain inside, engine is not everything in this life.

Man, I'm almost sorry that I even reported my run-in with the E55 AMG. It brought out all the whiners and cryers.

I was impressed with his ride, and I knew if I tried to take him, he'd get on it and I'd see what it could do. He did, and now I have an idea how fast those babies are.

Someone asked if it was the newer car or not - it was less than a year old in my opinion. My boss has a new E320, and it looked identical to it other than color, pipes, wheels, and skirts.

I knew this post would let all the flamers get a few things out of their systems - I even got Astroboy to vent!!!

I won't try to top the "crushed cricket" here but WHO THE HELL compares an E55 to the cars u mentioned? Then u mentioned 3 CARS THEY DON'T MAKE ANYMORE!!!! NO CAR compares the the F1. NO CAR. Bugatti couldn't get the quad turbos to work for more than a week and Vector, c'mon.

The E-class has one of the classiest interiors out there. It is the quickest and the fastest of any 4-door sedan currently on the market. The RS-6 is a tick behind in the 0-60 run but the gap widens as the E55 accelerates. The E55 is not the best handling sedan according to reports, but it sure is the fastest and quickest sedan.Good grief,it's not a completely different car. It's an E-class, hence E-55. Like TL and A-spec, with the pipes, wheels, skirts, etc.
