02 3.5L 6MT max vs. 06-07 TL-S

I was driving home the other night on the highway and saw the TL and normally I don't do this but I wanted to see how I would fair against him. We only had 2 small runs and some scattered traffic got in the way but he was pulling ahead slowly at about 100. Basically I lost (I drive the max) but it was close.

The TL was bone stock and seemed like a 6MT. My mods are the following 2002 SE 6-speed: WM STS, MT-90, ES poly shifter bushings, PR CAI w/ K&N, Hotshot headers, Warpspeed MS cat, Cattman b-pipe, Frankencar Rear Section, ES Motor Mounts, Technosquare L-Spec ECU, Emanage Blue, Cleared out turn signals, Black headlight housing, Umnitza DDEs, Progress RSB, Powerslots/Hawk HPS. I just realized yesterday that I had an exhaust leak (it was leaking when we ran) so I'm sure that cost me some ponies. My intake manifold has been modified and I have significantly more power up top compared to stock (most of the power is lower end) This is a link to my dyno http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=525572 I know these TLs dyno around 250whp SAE so he had about 10whp on me but I would like to run again with exhaust leak fixed. I have one more power mod planned that should put me at the 250ish whp mark and then I'm going to the track.

If anyone in the Orlando area wants to go Speedworld and run I'll post again before I plan on going.

P.s. - I don't mean for that to be a "my car is faster than yours" rather I want to see some import V6's modded at the track so we can beat up on mustang gt's =)

I had a 02 Maxima. Fast, sporty, roomy and fun. Since then I have owned a few other cars.
Will be picking up my 03 A Spec. Both good cars.

My roomie is going to supercharge his Mustang LX. He is a Ford guy as are couple of his buddies. I like my imports :-)

nice race, you sure have a long list of mods! With all that power you have from the mods, I am sure that the TL-S you were running against had 6MT too. Anyways, I thought an exhaust leak should increase your hp, but decrease your torque, but then I could be totally wrong.

Well one mod seems to turn into 5 and so on, it's an addiction.... The purpose of my getting this car was cheaper insurance, more room, less tickets and less modding. Well I don't get hassled by cops much but I have spent some dough on it. The one good thing about it though is that I bought all of them used and they will resell very easily for a similar price so I haven't completely lost my ass in them.

Well all those mods in a 5 yr old car vs new car and new technology. I have the VQ35DE the original gangsta, the newer VQ35HR (high rev) is more improved and upcoming Z and G are going to have a 3.7L variant of this motor making an astounding 330whp SAE!

I'm still making less power than him with my mods, dyno doesn't lie. However there are a few maxes 3.5L like mine making around 270whp N/A SAE! Mods unknown =(. The new TL-S is under-rated I would estimate crank hp slightly less than 300 SAE.

Those VQ35's are no joke but one thing I don't like is their fuel economy, they seem to drink more fuel than some other V6s in the market.

Nice list of mods maxspeed. The 5.5G Maxima has always been a sleeper to the untrained eye. Nice runs.

with those mods on a 6mt Max, you should have beaten the tl-s. The exhaust leak could have hurt a lot if it was a bad one. Is it a header, cat or piping leak? Post us some pics!!!!

It was leaking from 2 spots
1. End of the b-pipe connecting to the rear section, the bolts were a few threads from falling right off!
2. Old gasket connecting the b-pipe.

It's nice to see some compliments from another forum
We have our fair share of douchebags that flame any other ppl on the org.

I really like sleeper cars, when people ask me what car I drive after finding out how much I like cars they seem surprised almost all of the time.

This is another member racing a few new G35s (auto) similar mods as me.

As am I.

A lot of this may have to due with the number 5G/5.5G Maximas on the resale market for fairly low prices.

'Maxima vs TL' posts were common back in 2002 when both the A33 Maxima/Infiniti I and 2G 3.2TL received upgraded motors (VQ35DE and J32A2, respectively) with similar output and performance.

I am picking up a 03 TLS this weekend. Owned 91 Integra, 2002 Type R, and 98 Maxima and 02 Maxima.

The Maxima's are nice. The new ones have bubble butts. Different strokes for different folks. Can't wait until I get my TLS!

I'm not a big fan on the new maximas. It seems like the altima has taken the spot as the sporty sedan in nissan's lineup. I have no clue where the maxima lies now, I don't think Nissan does either.

A few of the 5.5G owners I came across felt likewise but, just swapped them out for 00-01 tails....not unlike this guy with 00-01 GXE/GLE tails: LINK

I used to be a memeber of Maxima.org few years back. I had a pretty highly modified 3.5 SE 6mt. Since then, I've been driving a 2005 G35 coupe and now just the other weekend bought a 2007 TL-S.

I can tell you that will all the mod's I had on my Maxima, my new TL-S defiantly has much more power overall.
