@@@Why wasnt i forewarned(racing experience)@@@

So early sunday morning im on I-35 its bright and early and the highway is empty..during my long trip i encountered a couple of people who wanted to test me...first we had a bmw 530 i ate this guy alive....(i was suprised) then we had a dodge stratus(yes a dodge lol) and a grand am (pontiac) now i destroyed all takers ....but boy did i not know was shortly in my future...so im feeling pretty good about the tl especially after my BMW kill..so i see this little car in front of me...(he had stickers all over the car) i figured hed wanna race ..so i get up on his tail and sway back and forth letting him know i wanted to get buy him....he finally moves and i punch it (im doing about 135)so absolutely leave him...so i decided to slow down and try him again(figured he didnt really open it up) so i slow down and punch it again again im in the 130s so then i see him punch it in his my rearview and he rapidly starts to suck me in..so i go for it all(mind you the highway was empty)i put it to the medal at 130 and thought id leave him ..he flew buy me like i was driving a 4 cylinder i was easily at 145....and he blew by me ...like i was doing 55 and he was doing 100..(he absolutely blew my doors off!!!!!!)later on that day i tell my friend about the encounter and he asks me what was it ....

There's always someone faster. Have you been asleep under a rock to know not to go against a WRX Sti?

No not a 4 cyl. but in 4th gear which along w/ 5th is an overdrive gear and wont get you in the VTEC powerband W/O hitting the speed limiter first, basicly the 5AT is designed to say "Whoo boy" after about 105mph.

BTW,do you guys over here in 3rd gen know the trick to downshift to 3rd after 80mph?

Who cares. I'd just tail him at 150mph until he doesn't want to go that fast anymore. Then I'll pass him.

Now that you know it, read more here about Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

You raced a beast with 300 hp (+30 than TL) and 300 lb/ft torque (+62 lb/ft than TL) and weighing 3298 lbs (277 less than a TL).

and likely modified as well. A lot of those guys don't leave their cars in stock form and it's not hard to pump up the hp in a turbocharged car. I know someone who runs 11's in the 1/4 mile in a regular WRX.

Thats called a ricer flyby. Once he passes you and blows you away, blowing by him doesn't mean you win.

Your story sure seems pretty hard to believe. So you are cruising along at see a Subaru (A WRX STI--which you have never heard of???). Hop on his tail, wag around like an idiot; then when he gets over you punch it and pass at "135", which would mean you both must have been cruising well north of 100 mph. Then slow down to 130, and punch it again, after seeing hin punch it, and get smoked while at approx 145ish.

While the story could have been believable if you were in Canada and talking KPH, in MPH its just too much. Subies aren't know for their top end, getting "blown" away in the 135-145mph is hard to believe. Finding two people foolish enough to race on the streets up to those speeds-hard to believe. Never having heard of a STI and being into cars at all; impossible...........

The STI has serious top end. Look at the trap speeds they run! I have seen STIs take out ZO6s with basic mods.

I thought the 5AT's were speed limited because of the all-season tires? I find this story hard to accept, and the gross spelling errors, not typos (" the medal", "get buy") remind me of a sub 21 year old.

Not to mention the fact that the '05s 545is haven't been released yet -- production should begin in August/September and should be available by October.

we have just seen some pretty tall tales lately and your topic is prime bait for critiscism... while you were at 135, you should have made a record speed wise and see when they car wont go any faster

The standard tires on the 5AT are WR rated tires: sustained 168 MPH.

They are speed limited but that limit has run from 147-154 by reports from ppl here and magazine reports.

I can't speak to that; still breaking in my TL.

if the AT's are theoretically limited at 147-154, does that mean that the manuals would have the same such limiters.

sorry for the highkjack

Hopefully you won't end up like these guys. Instead of risking your life, and the lives of others on the public roads - why not take your ride to the track?

I am certain they are the same as the tire ratings are the same and that is usually the motivation for a speed limiter. It's called vicarious liability by lawyers.

I had a rental 04 DeVille a couple of weeks ago and I thought someone popped the drag chute at about 110 MPH!

Why Race in a car??

If you wanted to buy something to race, why spend $32K. Go spend $8K - $12K and get a racing machine. I myself have a 2001 Yamaha R6. After being on a R6, the word "fast" is all relative. What you consider fast, isn't what I consider fast. Come one come all, stil, tl, who ever ... they all go down. You think 145 is fast inside of a cage, how about 145 with the street flying by under your feet. It's not the safest way to get around, but hey we are talking about racing. R6

4th gear is OD? I have one 145 in 4th...You are right though, if you are coming from a WOT acceleration, you can push 3rd to around 110 and it gets slow after that. I don't know the answer to your 80 question, as I said in 5AT 3rd redlines at 110, but I don't know if you can downshift from say 4th to 3rd after 80. ECU upgrade should fix that!

side note: Z rated tires I believe are up to 150, W rated are the only ones that are basically (relatively) unlimited. W = 168+. So they are better than Z's which have a theoretical top end.

Kinda odd that they'd put 168+ on this car. But I can attest at 140 they are frigging flawless, that was a seriously fun drive.

I second that.

It is sad but I especially feel bad for the innocent victims. In that story, the passenger died. While the driver sustained significant injuries, he'll recover and his family didn't loose anyone. No one deserves to die in such a way but maybe it should have been the other way around.

Ya that cool here's the trick, first of all the PCM wont let the tranny do a Wide Open Trottle "kick down" to third after a certain speed(actually many factors but let just say speed) Around 82mph is what if found, so after that your stuck in 4th for a passing gear. Solution is to put the shifter in SS and shift to 4th at what ever trottle you like, but you must let off on the gas for a moment and downshift to third then its up to 10X in a blink of an eye.

Whoever said that his story was BS, I'll have to agree with that.

tkedat: Good for you, we are talking about cars here.

Is it just me, or is more and more useless/irrelevant information finding its way into this forum?

TL should never race with the following cars:

1) Dodge SRT-4 13.5 est 1/4 mile

2) Mitsubishi Evolution 13.4 est 1/4 mile

3) Subaru WRX STI 13.1 est 1/4 mile

THe above cars will just eat us alive!!!! All my friends have these cars and no doubt they are alot faster and I ment ALOT faster than our TL's.
