What is the difference between LKAS and RDM

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the difference between these two systems on the 2016 RLX. Both appear to be used to keep your car in the lane when driving. I know my Advance with the LKAS and ACC will actual drive the car and keep it in the lane or make curves, etc for about 10 sec before telling me to put my hands on the steering wheel.

I struggled with this when the TLX came out. I think the difference is:
  • LKAS= User Activated and for "normal" driving
  • RDM= Always on and actively corrects steering to prevent an accident (i.e. not for normal driving)
  • LDW= Just a warning that you are leaving the lane. Will not actively correct anything.

Based on your explanation I am not sure the RDM would be of interest to me, I like the control of turning it on and off from the steering wheel. Makes me wonder if that is the only difference then why have LKAS and RDM unless I am missing something with its capabilities.

I found the answer, seem interesting.

Road Departure Mitigation Standard 2016 RLX Feature

Road Departure Mitigation
To help make sure that you only take the RLX off the pavement when you want to, all RLX models are equipped with Road Departure Mitigation, which detects objects on the side of the road and helps you avoid them.

While the Lane Keeping Assist uses a camera to identify lane markers such as painted lane lines, Botts Dots and cat eye markers, the Road Departure Mitigation System can identify objects such as trees or parked cars which would indicate spaces beyond the side of the road.

When the system detects the RLX is about to leave the road, it warns the driver with an MID warning message, an amber head-up warning and a tightening of the seat belt. The system then uses the active steering function of the Lane Keeping Assist system along with the vehicle’s autonomous braking capability to guide the RLX back into its detected lane.

Yea - I meant to reply earlier. RDM is essentially a more aggressive version of LKAS.

An aggressive LKAS system ??

Can it find the apexes on its own?

This was an Internet meme from way back when my ITR was still a novelty. And yes, I did catch the Cobra the next corner. :-p

Aggressive LKAS is what it sounds like. At least it gives you a chance to redeem yourself before it attempts to take over from you. Much better than I was fearing.

BTW, LOL at your meme, George!

LOL...no. But yes, more aggressive by definition of the additional steps it takes to prevent you from deviating off the road (warnings, seat-belt tensioning, braking, etc), unlike LKAS, where it only adjusts steering to keep you centered in the lane.

LKAS physically steers the car and can almost overtake control, and keep it in the lane.

RDM is a system that will physically vibrate/shake the steering wheel at you on those times, even with Lane Keeping Assist active, that you still drift out of the lane.

LKAS holds the steering and controls it. RDM is after and shakes the wheel with a vibration at you if it still goes out of lane.
