Question TLX Moving Up to Fill RLX Void

Based upon the below comparison chart from Acura, it looks like they are positioning the new TLX as a tweener between A4/3/C & A6/5/E. I hope that this means the new ILX will also move upmarket as I have always felt no luxury brand vehicle should be under $30k especially now that mass-market brands like Honda & Toyota are equipped with a lot of features.

There have been seem online concern over the price increase of the TLX which I actually am glad that they have done as long as it is still relatively a value. If Acura is serious about becoming more of a luxury player instead of premium, they need to raise their sticker/transaction prices. Of course this needs to be done slowly as the RLX has shown they have struggled to sell sedans in the $50/60k range. Much like Audi did before, if they build up their brand then they can more successfully launch higher tier vehicles. If this higher priced TLX is a hit, in a few years they could try again with the RLX after the sedan market picks back up & TLX owners may need something to move up to.

Interesting that Acura is not comparing the TLX to any Japanese or American brands. Hopefully another sign that they are serious about going upmarket.

By this logic, it is possible that any RLX successor may move upscale and attempt to "fill the gap" between the A6/A8, 5-series/7-series, E-class/S-class. That is, it will be priced closer to the 6/5/E, but offer luxury, room and performance closer to the 8/7/S.

Just speculating while we wait for news.

That is asking a lot from the TLX to compete in a constantly shrinking pool for all sedans. Acura needs to add some more engine/power choices like hybrid and de-tuned 3.0T for the Tech, A-Spec, and Adv models. I would even consider the next gen TLX as-is if Acura increased the 4/50k warranty to 6/70k and powertrain to 100k.

What's a bummer is that the incoming TLX is lacking a few standard features, like rain sensing wipers and folding door mirrors, that the RLX SH has. The TLX will offer that on the Advance package, I think. On paper, the RLX has more horsepower/torque than the TLX will have. But the TLX will have better technology. So you can have some cool features and power on the RLX or a tech upgrade and newer styling on the incoming TLX, but you can't have both.

If I was shopping around between the two, I would take a very hard look at the 2020 RLX SH. The styling may be a bit vanilla, but it still seems to be the superior car.

The TLX and RLX were my choices on paper. I didn't like how Acura updated the RLX exterior and neglected the interior (no carplay, electronic dampers with different IDS modes, real wood trim, thigh support seat extension, etc...). The wife felt the TLX was "meh" on the test drive. She fell in love with the RLX after 10 seconds behind the wheel. Acura will have to really update the next gen TLX styling, technology, and aesthetics to get that instant "love" me and wife felt with the RLX SH even with all its flaws.

As I recall, it took one or two years after introduction of the RLX before Acura made the Sport Hybrid available. I guess that could happen with the TLX 2G. Would be a shame if it didn't.

Good point, until the supply of decent RLX's are spoken for. Especially if you want to buy new.

I am truly going to try and sound more civilized rather than PISSED off on lies that Acura put on that image up above that is posted.
So, very simply put: good luck to Acura to try to sell this marketing BS...

1. you cannot get TLX w SH-AWD for this price; it is rather 3-4k MORE (42-43k) if you want shawd on TLX...
2. am I hallucinating or they put TLX on the same image with A6, 5 series and E-class?!?!?!? Ok, whoever cooked and boiled that in Acura Marketing kitchen, must have huge balls to put their career on this load of $hit
3. Calling Audi AWD system "conventional" is a heretic statement... sure, may not be as good as SH-AWD, but conventional, c'mon now... that's like Audi coming up and saying they have quattro 4wd, vs Acura conventional awd... yes, that would be inaccurate to say... see?
4. Killing off 5 different models, to come up with the car such as TLX and 4cyl bangere for 45-50k price tag (non type s model) - FAIL... no matter how you try to put it, it is a fail.
5. Speachleeeeeeeeeeeeesssssss...

Hope I did not hate much lolll

If you are looking for new RLX, in IL (Pauly Acura) is about 49k+ttl for RLX... you get 377hp, 7spd dct auto, 28/29mpg, 5 or low 5s to 60mph - so however you look at it, IT BEATS TLX - in any format (Type S I do not include here because we do not know how good or how bad it will be... by bad, I mean pricing...

I don't think many cross shopped RLX or 4G TL against A6, 5 series or E. But if Acura wanted 2G TLX to be considered in that class, they should have added 1.5 inch more leg room, because that metric is not comparable to mid size sedans. Type S with 0-60 in 4.5-4.7 range (just a guess) can be considered in similar performance bracket as 540xi or E53 amg (4.7 and 4.4 0-60). Dynamically also it will be closer to these bigger/heavier vehicles than say more nimble and lighter 340xi and c43amg.
