My review of the 2014 RLX Advance

I've put several hundred miles on a Crystal Black Pearl RLX Advance / Tech / Krell over the past week, and I've enjoyed it. The car has a really nice "presence" on the road. Can't beat the level of refinement for highway cruising, and I was pleasantly surprised with how it performed when pushed. For more, here's my blog entry:

Nice review from a driver that puts on so many more miles than most.

Thanks! I just sold the red 88 Legend coupe yesterday, and the 94 Legend coupe is my tried and true high miler. The RLX is going away today (was just a press loan) but I'm getting a 2014 MDX in its place, so I'll be putting together a similar write-up of the MDX over the next week or so. And I plan on getting it dirty!

Haha, that's probably true. I'm not afraid to put a car through its paces for the sake of evaluation.

Thanks, I appreciate that!

Also, I forgot to mention for any who are interested in seeing more about the RLX "VIP" sedan that was on display at SEMA last week in Las Vegas, check out my other write-up on that. It's a stunning car.

No kidding! Holy crap that's a lot of miles on the Legend! How long you plan on keeping her? Any major repairs? Looks great for being almost 20 years old! Helps that you live in a warm weather state though.

Yeah, it's actually already over 20 years old. The car was built in October 1993 and I put together a write-up celebrating its "birthday" last month:

http://drivetofive.wordpress.com/201...or-the-legend/

If you want me to email you a copy of my Excel maintenance spreadsheet, PM me. It has record of every oil change since the car was new. It's gone through 6 timing belts & water pumps, 4 windshields, a few alternators. The only time it's been towed was when the original fuel pump died at 399,750 miles. Been a great car!

I'm daily driving the ILX 6-speed now, so the Legend doesn't get driven as much. But I did drive it to North Carolina & back this summer for the 9th annual National Acura Legend Meet. That was a 4,000 mile drive and the car did not skip a beat.

Thank you!!

love, Love, LOVE the Legend coupes. I posted in another thread that it's my all time favorite Acura, next to maybe the NSX. Only my current CTS-V elicited such a desire for a car. Unfortunately back then when I had my '93 Vigor I couldn't quite swing the Legend.

I still think the design is timeless and they still look great today, provided you can find one without any rust.

You've obviously taken care of it. Beautiful car.

Thanks! I had a Vigor for awhile - fun car! Yeah, not an ounce of rust on the Legend. Southwest car its entire life. I did have some paint work done twice - the first time was in 2007 after I hit 2 deer near Austin, Texas, and the second was last year, just before the car went into a local dealership showroom for a few weeks at 515,000 miles.

I agree with you, love the NSX too.

I'd love to see Acura put the level of RLX engineering into bringing back a V6, 6-speed manual, 2-door coupe. Rebirth of a Legend. I'd be the first in line.

Got a chance to drive an NSX once. Probably not a big deal for some people but I was thrilled. It was a huge treat.

Nice job, Tyson! ....as always.

So did your buddy let you take the CTS-V coupe for a drive?

I wish Acura had let you take the SH-SH-AWD RLX on your drive. Maybe they will next time.

BTW, 60k on the ILX already?

The CTS-V is absolutely wicked! I haven't yet driven his, but he did some modifications to the exhaust system and it sounds like a beast. Love it. He came out on another drive with us recently and had the highest-HP car there by far.

As soon as an RLX SH-AWD hits the Phoenix press fleet I'll definitely do everything I can to get behind the wheel. The ILX will roll 60k in the next week or so - it's going to LA for the Auto Show next week. Been a great ride!

Dude, thank you! This is an amazing review and so hits the nail on the head on how I feel every day driving my RLX Advanced (same color!). I'm sooo tired of all the complaints and bitching by people who've most of them, have yet to set foot in the car and actually drive it.

Like i've said a dozen times before, the RLX experience is in the interior and driving the car. There is simply no other car that matches this combination in the the way the RLX does. The RLX is the true definition of the "Acura" experience.

Thanks again for a great review and helping shed some more positive light on what is an amazing car.

Thanks for the review. I am considering next year's RLX. Probably not the hybrid AWD since that would be way out of my price range, but the base RLX. So, since I passed by a dealership to pick up oil and filter for my TL, I talked the service manager into letting me take the demo they have for a ride. So, here I was in the RLX. My impressions echo yours. However, the damn thing looks and feels big. I thought my 09 TL was big but this is huge! Wish Acura comes up with a descent coupe that looks a bit less "fat" and less bling bling than the Accord coupe. The navi setup looks impressive and neat for the tech savvy like yours truly... but ask the little wife to figure out this one and she is sure to cause an accident!!!! Still considering the RLX for next year, but we'll see what else comes up.

When the 2G Legend Coupe came out, I knew I needed to get one. I had a '92 Rosewood Beige with MT (see pics in my Garage). It was a superb car, and I kept it for 18 years. When I sold it, it still had original clutch and original exhaust. I did replaced the belts, water pump and timing belt, and other than tires, that was it. It had not a speck of rust. I hope my TL, which is an all-round better car, is so reliable.

I would highly recommend you keep your 09 TL for a bit yet. I traded mine in May 2012 for the new RLX and have been living at my dealer. As others have stated, Acura is not at all helpful, the dealers are the best bet for assistance. My 04 and 09 TL only needed oil changes and gas. My 14 RLX hasn't given me one month without issues. Let them work the kinks out. You are best to wait. I now have to use an attorney to get my money back. Never a pleasant thing!
