Hi,

I have a 2015 RLX Advanced, and a 2014 MDX Advanced. In the MDX i listen to the radio (FM HD, XM, Bluetooth streaming) at the 6-8 volume level, and i find it loud enough. On the RLX Krell system i find that i need to bring the volume level up to 10-12, to be the same as the MDX. I know this is subjective, but where do you guys put the volume level to listen to music or talk radio normally.

Krell + iPod is very high quality audio, so I'll very often have it up to 17 sometimes to catch the highs and nuances.

I will not generally turn up XM Satellite that high because it doesn't add to the listening pleasure. Maybe 8-11 with XM.

 

Thank you George! I have not used wired yet.....will do that on my way up to Boston on Saturday..... Do you feel that the fronts overpower the rears, more specifically the center channel? Whenever you get a chance, could you please let me know what are your sound settings?

yep, agree with center being overpowering ... it can be adjusted but im getting used to it ... when family is in the car volume is using 7-9 ... i'm its just me 15-19

For me it seems to depend on the sound quality of the music source I'm listening to - and what I'm listening to.

If I'm listening to the local news/traffic station, I'm probably in the 8-10 range, but if I'm listening to my favourite bands on the HDD, I am often up in the 20 range. I do however acknowledge that it will ultimately lead to hearing loss with prolonged use of this vehicle.

I am still playing around with my base/treble/subwoofer settings to find what works best for my ears.

 

I'm also in the 8 - 10 range for most listening but crank it up if a favorite song comes on and I'm alone in the car. As I've said before, the best word that I would use to describe the Krell system is CLEAR.

 

I usually have it at 15 to 17

 

As other have said, it also depends on your sources and probably your listening preference with regard to loudness. I use my iPod for music and have the setting on 10 to 15. It depends on some of the song, I find some are good at 10 and other I have to crank up to 15, love the wheel on the steering wheel for changing the volume, song and mute.

 

Thank you all for your comments! I guess the ELS on the MDX is just tuned differently.....a 6 on that one is a 10 on the Krell.

 

Don't forget about the efficiency of the speaker as well. I don't know the ratings of the krells vs the stockers, but I'll bet they're less efficient - so you'll need slightly more power to drive them at the same (perceived) volume. I find i use a tiny bit more volume vs my old accord ex-l (10 vs 9 for spoken word programming, for example).

 

Is there a subwoofer in the very back? I don't hear it if it is, if so what is the size of it? it isn't like a 10" one in the back with a lot of lows in it, I know that.

Here is a description and details of the Krell system in the RLX:

 

I believe the Krell system has less power than the ELS.

 

Yes, there is, but it's not huge.

The system comes into its own with an iPod recorded at high bit rates.

My impression of audio quality and media, in decreasing order:

(1) iPod
(2) HD Radio
(3) Certain kinds of CD media
(4) HDD (won't hold your high quality CD correctly)
(5) XM Satellite

We all listen to XM very often, because of the convenience of it and the instant availability of odd listening venue like 1940's music, old new wave, Elvis , NPR talk radio, and all kinds of odd specialist things that you will have a hard time finding in all localities on broadcast media when you want it.

And I have to say that I think XM sounds better on Krell than anywhere else. I think they find some fancy way to decompress it.

But even though it sounds better, it pales in comparison to iPod high bit rate recordings, and HD Radio.

That one CD slot limits your possibilities for high quality audio, and even though it's automatically recorded to the HDD, it's at a lower bit rate for later playback and just doesn't sound quite right if you've accustomed yourself to the better quality audio.

I really, really recommend learning how to set up your iPod well, and using that.

 

From my years in the audio business in the past, I've seen many people confuse bass quantity with bass quality. It is VERY easy to get quantity, just use larger speakers and lots of power. It is more expensive and more difficult to get quality. This requires high current amps and lighter, more responsive woofers. One difficulty when selling speakers at the high end, is that many people have not been exposed to truly good bass. Now, having said all that, there is clearly a market for those that say, "I get it, but I want it to THUMP". Maybe the Krell is not the best choice in this case.

 

I went into my audio controls I had to turn the treble and the bass from all the way up to in the middle. Also What is the DTS surround sound (the last choice on the menu). If I have it off, the sound is a lot louder if I turn it on it knocks the volume several steps down. Also what is the 2nd to the last option for? the choices are Low Mid and High I forget what that is for. I hear NO sub in the back at all, I guess there isn't one there. I listen to it around 19-20 on the regular radio for 2-3 songs then have to turn it down.


That is another question how do you use the HDD radio? is there a USB port you plug something in to download it? Does this thing play MP3 Cd's?
