Summer Tires on RDX

Is anyone in the warmer climates running Summer Tires on their RDX instead of All-Seasons? I’m in South Florida and my RDX will probably never see cold weather.

What would be the advantage of summer tires over all seasons? Are they generally quieter or softer riding or something else?

Summer Tires typically offer better performance in both Wet and Dry Conditions over an All-Season. They have a softer compound that wear faster. On my other cars, the trade-off was well worth it. You should not use them when temperatures get in the low 40’s and below. Since I am located in Florida, I am curious about the performance gains on an RDX. All Seasons are typically described as a “Jack of all Trade” Tire, “Master of None”. With that being said, there are some outstanding high performance all seasons out there like the Michelin Pilot AS3+ which I had on my old Lexus and the Continentals. These tires come close to the performance of a Summer Tire.

I wasn’t sure how much of a difference it would make on an SUV. Was hoping peeps would chime in. My wife’s Volvo XC60 needs tires and it has the 20 inch wheels and same tire size as my A-Spec which has 2200 miles. I wanted to put my old tires on her car and get the new ones for me.

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping they might be a quieter style tire. That's what I'm looking for in a tire.

if you want quiet, you need to get a Touring Tire! You will sacrifice some handling.

I called Michelin last week and told the rep that our number one priority in a tire was the lowest road noise possible and nothing else was anywhere near as important. The lady recommended this tire, I'm not terribly confident that it will be a huge improvement over the stock Continental's but I'm desperate enough to give them a try next time Costco has one of their big sales.

I considered the Michelin PilotSport 4 tire, but they are much more expensive and they are not known for great wear, or perhaps the extra grip promotes driving behaviors that facilitate the deposition of rubber on the road, thus wearing the expensive, sticky summer tires faster......just saying. K-Tuner Stage 2 + sticky summer tire = YEEEHHAAAWWWW!

This guy knows how to RDX. This is my dream couple as well, stage 2...nice summer tires...too bad I'm in California. Don't think it's allowed.

i
f you read all of these aftermarket tunes, there is a disclaimer that they are for off-road use only. Well......I have passed emissions with aftermarket tunes, and since these tunes do not disable any of the pollution control devices, they are not discernible by AZ emissions testing. I have passed with passing colors both with tailpipe and OBD tests.

I would suggest getting Michelin Pilot AS3. Its grip level easily rivals many summer tires, and is a lot more durable. I don't feel the stock suspension setup of RDX is stiff enough to make good use of the grippest summer tires like Pilot PS4. Not that you cannot use it, just that AS3 is sufficient enough.

Since I removed my OEM Goodyears and replaced them with the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 AS+, I concur with this recommendation. We drove Phoenix to Minneapolis and they run quiet and grippy. I haven’t lost traction in them yet and they will last many happy miles on my car. I went with +1 size over OEM and am anxiously awaiting the lowering springs that someone will come up with soon.....c’mon aftermarket companies!

Can you snap a side view pic? Did road noise increase?

Curious: what was the reasoning for going +1 size? And is there a discernible difference in MPG?

Actually, no...I went with a wider tire and a very slightly taller tire for the footprint of the wider tires and the taller part contributed to filling in the gap in the wheel well....I want to lower mine, but since no springs are available yet, a guy has to do what he can.

The handling on these PilotSports is great and they are super quiet.

I put the Pilot Sport AS/3's on and it made a big difference in handling and straight line tracking......but there was a slight increase in road noise and the ride got a bit stiffer...which is what I wanted. A performance tire with stiffer sidewalls will improve handling but ride somewhat stiffer.
