Aspec 20" tire for SHAWD (replacement Tire options)
Aspec 20" tire for SHAWD (replacement Tire options)
Looking to get a new set of tires, as the Goodyear Eagle RS-A's have been good, but at 21k miles/3 years old - want a fresh set for the fall and winter. Those never let me down in the winter snow or rain, just get a bit louder as the tread wears. I'd rather try a different tire with newer technology, as the GoodYear RS-A's have been out for a long time.
Has anyone changed to either of these tires - what's your exp. (Pro or con) after a 1K+ miles?
Vredestein Hypertrac All Season or the Continental ExtremeContact DSW 06 Plus
Looked at a lot of other tires, but most were a lot more expensive. Plus, I had the Michelin CrossClimate 2 on a previous Hybrid - they were louder, vague center steering feel at highway speeds and reduced MPG by 10%-15%.

Continental ExtremeContact DSW 06 Plus and Michelin Cross Climate 2 seem to be the most popular options. You can do a search - topic has been discussed at length. Also heard people mention Pilot Sport All Season AS3+. Not sure where you live (snow?) - but that will impact your decision

if you dont need crazy winter traction, I highly recommend the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4. I replaced the terrible OEM Goodyears about 2 months after taking delivery and will stick with this tire indefinitely. Might be a bit too much tire for the RDX, but I have 100% confidence in the tire at all times... amazing traction, dry & wet - quiet, looks good
disclaimer: I'm in SoCal so its a desert w/rain a few times a year.

Thanks…sounds like a good option I will do some research on. The Goodyears are okay just going straight or in the snow, but definitely fall below par on feel of very twisty highway roads, like the one from Knoxville to Asheville NC, truly scary at 65mph with sweeping reducing radius long corners and concrete wall deciders.
the Pilot Sport A/S 4 (replaced the 3+) in my opinion is an almost perfect fit for the stock 20" wheels. I considered the Continental DWS06, but in the end I prefer the slightly more squared off look of the Michelin and have more experience w/the brand. Also, to be fair, I am considering trying the Yokohama Advan Sport A/S next, but it will be hard for me to move away from Michelin after the flawless experience I am having so far. Even since installing the Eibachs, with proper alignment, etc they are wearing very nicely.
To provide a bit more context, my experience with the Goodyear RS-A OEMs was anytime all four were not firmly planted on the ground (example: entering/exiting a driveway, uneven pavement, etc), the traction suffered noticeably. With the Pilot Sport A/S, I have yet to be in a situation where I felt I was lacking traction that should have been there. I've put about 25k on this set of PS A/S 3+ and have yet to find the limit - and I like to drive in a "spirited" manner. Perhaps traction would have been better if I had opted for the SH-AWD, but at the time, I didnt want to drop an extra $2,500 for that option (small regret but im fine w/it).

Leaning toward the Continental DWS 06+ or Vredestein Hypertrac All Season, as both scored pretty high in light snow conditions.
I can attest the Goodyear Eagles RS-A's do pretty well in the snow, as I spent a winter in heavy snow and extreme cold temps - never got stuck once - its was a goat to climb roads that were unpaved - where others AWD got stuck; but I attribute that mostly due to the superior SHawd system of the Acura. Having a better tire with newer tech than the Goodyears will be a bonus/blessing.

Ive put 3k miles on my OEM RS-As (got the car with 17k) and I have has zero complaints. They handle well when pushed and good in the rain. I will probably take these up to 30-40k before I look for a replacement. Leaning toward the Conti DWS as I've heard they will handle a little better.
For me, handling and a tire with as little flex as possible comes first. Road noise is never louder than my stereo and I enjoy a very firm ride. I like pushing my cars as much as possible on nice twisty roads so any extra traction I can get, I will take!

The RS-A's to me are a good road trip tire - was good in the snow when newer (less that 10K miles), but 36 months later and 21K are louder and less grip and feel on curvy high speed highways. The RS-A's are older tire tech, Goodyear's newer tires Eagle Exhilarate or Sport All Season are there newer tire tech. Seen a ton of reviews that the Conti's are superior in many aspects - so I will try those.

decent amount of rain in SoCal this week (definitely not as bad as the news makes it out to be), but really wet nonetheless... I have to say the Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 are about 100-150% better in the wet than the AS 3+. Pretty impressed to be honest. just a quick update for anyone who might read this thread.... Cheers everyone!
I'll take the deep dive on getting new Conti's DWS06 Plus next month, then a 2k mile road trip should tell me the difference. Lot of raving reviews on the Conti's - from TireRack and other tire forums.

Not OP but I have the DWS06+ on my A-Spec. I think they're great tires (it's my 3rd time running this series) BUT I'd say that the firmness and sportiness of the tire exacerbates the already firm ride of the A-Spec. In retrospect I should have gone with a touring tire like a Primacy Tour A/S or a CrossClimate for a slightly softer ride.

It's better but not dramatically so - if road noise matters there are better tires to choose from. What you get with the DWS06+ compared to the RS-A is much better dry, wet, snow traction and grip, significantly better handling and somewhat better noise levels. The Goodyears are over 20 years old in design so even a standard touring tire like a Michelin Primacy A/S (and probably even stuff like a General Altimax RT) would be better in all areas than the Goodyears (I think they are terrible tires - very squirmy and imprecise)
