Water pump leaking

My Acura RDX 2020 currently at 64k miles has water pump leaking. My mechanic advised me to replace it before it becomes problematic . Quoted me $490 for both parts and labor. Is this reasonable price ?

To give you an idea of parts cost the selection below is what rockauto offers in lieu of of OEM.

Example of OEM cost from an Acura parts online vendor. The red is the online price before shipping/handling/taxes. The other price shown is an example of dealer msrp.

The net would be his labor charge plus taxes / shop supplies, depending on what actual component he chooses & installs.
If that $$$ amount is reasonable to your budget than .

Might as well replace belt & tensioner while you're in there.

Coolant drain & fill every couple years could help mitigate the issue going forward.

Price sounds reasonable, I would get OEM. I think you just got unlucky, first time hearing about water pump on this car, they appear to be reliable

Did he show you proof it is in fact leaking?

That price seems really cheap but he's probably going to use some junk ass parts for that too! I'd ask him.

Use OEM

I haven't changed a water pump on the newer K series (K20C / K24W) but on the older K motors it's super easy. Just pop off the belt & tensioner and drain the coolant. Aisin water pump from Rock Auto is like $60 or $70. Doesn't take more than a couple hours.

If it's just as easy on the newer K series, that price seems high to me. Although I guess with $200/hr shop labor that's about right.

Edit: "Japanese OE" Yamada part for 3G RDX is $68 on rockauto

Yep, on the one hand, $500 for any accessory replacement these days seems pretty reasonable to me, but also you can certainly save a lot of money by doing it yourself. It does seem very early for one to fail, but sometimes it's just a bad roll of the dice. My 2010 was still rocking its original pump when I sold it at 215k miles.

Many newer water pumps use a plastic impeller which isn't as reliable.

But look on the bright side, at least it's not an electric water pump.
