I have a new tailgate and it groans just like the original.

I wonder how many expensive spring replacements they will make before they say it's 'normal operation' or hit it with Honda's universal cure, Shin-Etsu grease?

You got your car back? I missed that. Congrats. If I am in error, and you didn’t get it back yet, change ‘congrats’ to ‘them bastids’.

Mine was fixed on 7/12 and the noise is officially back. See previous post around this date for a list of parts replaced. I'll wait until there is permanent fix this time.

Intermittent problem?

I was going to post that “hey, mine quit groaning,” but that only lasted for 3 days then it started back again. Anyone else notice the noise stop for a while, then come back?

Easy fix, no big deal.
Another update. Mine is still "moan" free for over a month since my DIY dry lube fix. Had it in temps from 40s to 105 and it is nice and quiet. Don't know if it will last, only time will tell.

That’s great news and thanks for the update. look forward to long term result.

The question remains for Acura, why do we have to DIY spray a brand new 45k car?

what spray did you use and where exactly did you spray it? Pics of the process?

I used CRC Dry Moly Lube, used the tiny straw from a WD40 can and basically sprayed around from both sides of the top right hinge. This product dries almost instantly so no mess. Also stopped a squeak on one of my ATVs coming from a bushing. Great product and safe for plastics and rubber. Sorry no pics.

me too

Just saw this thread and mine was made in September 2018 and has the same groan, but it seems to be only happening when opening and at about the highest position.
It does not happen every time I open it, though. I am logging this and report to the dealer at the first service next January.

Mine seems to have quit moaning or groaning; I’ve not heard it do so during the past month. I did not do anything special (DryLube or WD40).

I noticed that the groaning stopped when the weather got colder but, when we have a warm day, it comes back.
I haven’t done any of the fixes.
I’ll tell the service department to address it at the first maintenance. I’m at 40% at the moment.

it’s definitely affected by temperature on my car. Weird.

What’s so weird or mysterious about this?

It’s very apparent that the poor fit or out of spec parts is causing the rubs on the plastic parts. Heat causing parts to expands, exacerbate the problem. Heat expands and cold contracts. Simple physics.

whats not trivial is how Acura is addressing the issue, which to this date I have not seen an official fix and probably never will for the already produced cars.

Mine kind of went away as I have not heard it since 10/25 and I do open it at least every other day.
It could be that the binding is now broken in, but I am keeping an eye on it.

Mine started making the moaning sound about four months after I took delivery. Now that the weather has turned colder it only makes the sound on warm days.

OK—I drove from Virginia to South FL this week—loaded groceries on Tuesday afternoon, high 80 degree temperatures—hatch made a loud groan, followed by a soft moan. I’m starting to believe in the “expansion/contraction” theory.

I took my delivery on Oct 30th and heard the moaning sound only yesterday for the first time when the car was parked in sun during the day. It happens only while closing for me. Definetly based on outside temprature. I parked the car in shade after a couple of hours in sun, and the maoning went away by evening. Planning to open a case with acura but do not want to go to dealer before first service. Mine is at 90%. So still time for the first service. Not sure if they would keep the case open that long though.

Mine has been noise/trouble-free from day 1, regardless of temperature.

Same here. The only sounds I've heard is a 'k-chunk' when it latches.

Do you have an alignment issue with your rear hatch? Mine does the K-Chunk when it latches, but that is does to an alignment issue. An issue that is still not addressed by the dealer, sadly.

It's not an issue - just a nice solid closing sound when it gets fully closed and latches.

Tailgate noise

Now that it has warmed up seems like the moaning/groaning sound has gotten longer and louder. Does anyone know if Acura has a fix yet?

Nice warm day here in TX and my moan came back. My dry lube fix lasted about 11,000 miles so this time it will go in for a permanent fix if and when the dealership has one. We will stop by and get it on file that we have this issue as well as our infotainment system takes forever to load.

47 degrees in Delaware and the moan is back. Seems to be about 45 degrees or above. They need to fix this!

After 3 attempts to get my dealer to hear the tailgate noise it finally got warm enough for them to hear it. They had to order the parts so just waiting Should be completed next week. Now if they can just fix my break squealing and my reverse cold start issue would be nice. Cold start was much worse in winter but still seems excessive during warmer weather.

i had the dealer in FL diagnose the “moan”. They replaced the passenger side hatch spring and that fixed it. Hope it doesn’t return.

I went in for my A1 service today and reported the noise. Dealer replaced the spring and no groaning so far. They mentioned it is an updated part number and has fixed the same noise on few other vehicles.

Thanks! Mine does this also only when it was parked under the sun on a hot day (above 70 F). I am going to show your work order to the dealer. The sunglasses holder also creaks when opening on a hot day

Nope the noise I had was when the tailgate was closing from the top position. During the initial travel there was a groaning noise. This happened only during hot days. But after the fix from dealer, I do not hear it anymore.

Showed this to my local dealer and they said it’s not a new part number and that all of the ones they have done have come back within a few weeks. 🤷🏻♂️ I’m going to take it the dealer I bought it from and see if I get the same story.

Ok I will post here if I get the noise back. I have tested it so far by parking the car in direct sunlight whole day and opening/closing the hatch 4-5 times. But it's only a couple of days so we will see. Fingers crossed.

Reporting back after a week. No noise so far. I will probably report back after a month again.

Anyone experiencing rear hatch "click/thud" noise shortly after hatch start to open? (i have a video, but don't know how to load it here). It only happens during opening, no noise when closing. Not a moaning sound, just "click" noise.

I checked and no apparent mechanical contact points near rear hatch to upper chassis. It happens 100% of the time. Haven't noticed it until recently. I live in TX so it's been very hot recently, not sure if that's contributing to it.

It feels like something within the mechanical arms, but hard to tell which side it may be coming from. Like to know if anyone's noticed this.

What's everyone moaning update? I don't want acura tearing my car apart if the moan comes back.
