Add another problem to my list. Driving on a smooth road and then I heard a big boom. It was my sun roof . It shattered. Looks like the frame for it came up and pushed through the glass. Always something with this damn 2019 RDX. Dropped it off at the dealer earlier. Wont here anything back until Monday. Anyone else have this issue.

There have been other reports of sunroof problems, ranging from popping noises to glass failure. AFAIK not a huge number of glass failures, but a few.

 

where do you see that the frame pushed up and damaged it? Is there a little metal peice there on the bottom that poked out?

 

It's hard to see in the picture but that is why you can see the gap right there. Seems like the track for the sunroof was forced up and popped thr glass up. It was loud very loud and was driving in a smooth road. I have heard popping before like body flexing but that was only when the car was at an angle. This happened on a flat surface.

 

let us know how the process of getting it covered goes, some people that had broken sunroofs had to go through insurance because they (the dealer) blamed it on outside forces, like a rock or something, but there was no way to prove any of it from either side really. BUT you seem to have a very obvious point of failure here, that I would think 100% should be covered under warranty, and getting you covered in a loaner while they fix it.

Can you take some more closer pictures, like from the inside and outside of the track that caused it to break? This very well could be what others have possibly had happen to them as well, but outside forces could very well be their problems as well. I wonder how that piece just broke randomly, that is very worrying, should that be something that is very strong and durable!

 

The car is at the dealer but I circled where you can see part of the frame popped up . The manager I left it with saw it and also said looks like it came off the track . So I hope it gets covered. If not I'm done with this car . I've had nothing but issues.

 

So the track for the forward sunroof ( which moves ) became dislodged and thrust upward into the rearward sunroof?

 

I think that's what it has to be because it is on the back side. Unless it is just where the back roof sits on and popped up. Either way something came undone and pushed up. forcefully. It was loud.

 

Hard to blame that on an external event, unless it was a tractor beam from an orbiting spaceship.

I have to say this is also one of my concerns now. My moonroof was sticking up on the rear left corner about half an inch. They just tightened it down last week where it is almost flush with the roof. I am very concerned with the extra tension on the frame and glass, mine is going to shatter in the summer heat. The number of issues with these cars is absolutely stunning. Cant wait to get out of this vehicle.

 

So I heard back from the dealer after Acura requested the dealer to take pictures of my sunroof and they are actually going to cover it under warranty. I guess the pictures they sent acura saw something and are going to cover it.

What is crazy is, my rear window shattered the same exact way your sun roof shattered. Brought it into my local dealer and after investigation with acura, they said i do not have enough proof it happen by itself.

 

What were you supposed to do, video it shattering?

 

exactly.... i was in a parking lot looking for parking and out of no where the glass shattered. they did not help at all.

 

I know these things get posted in owner groups and it's not the norm, but still, I'm really surprised that people are having ANY windows that spontaneously explode. Do all cars have a small percentage of this? Is it bad glass, or bad install? This is very definitely not acceptable.

 

Not questioning that your window shattered by itself.

A few years ago, my Dad parked his car at a parking lot and I was with him. We came back to the car about an hour later and found the car's ear window shattered (not broken). We asked around and no one saw anybody came close to the car and hit the window. After a close inspection of the entire window, I found a small impact point no more than 1/4" in diameter. We then looked around and found the gardener was using a gas powered weed trimmer (the one with steel blade) cutting the weeds around the parking lot about 50 yards away. Pretty sure it was the trimmer that kicked a small rock and hit the window. Nope, we did not question the gardener about this and just took it as an accident.

 

interesting... but in my case i was inside my car when it happened.

 

Same thing happened today in a 2020 RDX loaner. driving, clear day about 89 degrees. No others cars around and, pop like a shotgun. Of course dealership wants me to pay for it. I think exploding sunroofs and the popping sound coming from the left side roof area are related.

I did find that there is a class action lawsuit on rex's exploding sunroofs.

I posted on another thread, but my front sun roof exploded tonight. No other cars around, I thought I had been shot, it was so loud. Filed a claim with my insurance. I’m wondering if this is a larger issue. Anywhere we should report this? I’d love for Acura to pay my deductible and for the retinting of my glass. Just bought this car last month. This is crazy.
