Brake squealing
#41
I have had the same issue with my 2019 RDX and struggled through the same issue on my 2106 RDX. It started happening with my 2016 a month after I got it in August; brought it in three times and they could never replicate it or had ANY other issues with other vehicles. I simply gave up and dealt with it only to discover that they had issued a TSB for it and it was the number one complaint of that year. It gives me hope that you have already been able to have the rotors and pads replaced. I have never experienced this with any of my other new cars besides Acura.

I have heard the brakes squeal on mine a few times but I live in Phoenix and it’s dusty here which can cause brakes to squeal so I was thinking that was what was causing it. My 2010 Nissan Murano had squealing brakes and Nissan said it’s not a problem, just dust.
But maybe with this car it is a problem.

Just had my rear brake pads and rotors replaced yesterday but the squeal was still there.
During the first drive this morning, I didn’t hear anything which I thought was gone; but when I went out for lunch, I could hear the squeal again.

Factories don't apply anti-squeal compound on the back of the pads. Dealerships may if you ask them. You may have to supply it. Or you can do it yourself.

Agree but doesn't make any difference with the RDX brakes, they still squeal even if they have anti-squeal compound! I did it at home--> not working and went to the dealership to get it done and also not working!

Same issue here everyone. Brakes squeel in the mornings very loud, but then goes away after 10 mins. Also squeel after the car is parked for an hour after a drive.
Hopefully acura will rectify the issue soon. It's pretty annoying to have a brand new car act like this. Lots of small issues with the car so far. Starting to lose faith in acura.

I have the same problem with the squealing brakes with the first few stops. I also seem to hear a little grinding once the squealing stop at low speed. Anyone else hearing the grinding noise.
#52
Yupp. Mine does the same thing as your described. Dealership just changed my front pads and the squeeling is gone, but I still hear the grinding noise. Getting them checked out this week. Hopefully they just replace the rotors and it'll solve the issue.

Did the dealer mention what was the issue with original pads? Since the new pads should be same part number as original. Just wondering if replacement is a long term fix. Then again dealership would not just change pads without any reason.

had same problem

Mine also makes noise when it gets cold outside and by the time I get to the dealer it stops the noise. Had it checked twice now but no problems found. Waiting for it to get colder and stay that way all day then I will leave the RDX at the dealer and let them drive it when it is cold.

If you all read more into this thread, you will see that Acura has stated that they are aware of the issue and that a "fix" is coming. What you are experiencing is a known issue and cannot be fixed "today" by replacing pads or rotors. I would just hang tight and await Acura's communication and TSB/Recall as going back to your dealer today is futile. Most of our guesses is that Acura will change the pad material but that is just a guess that some have mentioned. A rotor is a rotor so I can't imagine that being the issue but they may decide to replace both to resolve the issues many are facing. Being in the South, we have experienced the light sounding "grinding" but no squealing to date as we approach 4500 miles.

I took my RDX to the dealer for this issue and they didn't even look at it. All they said is there is nothing they can do .they were going to contact the district manager to see if they will do anything. My guess they won't. Basically told me to deal with it and didn't know if there will be a fix anytime. They did not mention anything about a bulletin or anything like that .

For what it’s worth I was having the same issue everyone else was having with their brakes. After seeing no one got anywhere with their respective dealers I decided to take care of it myself. Went on rock auto.com and ordered new ceramic pads for $50 front and rear. Swapped them out and not only is there no squealing the pad feel is sooooo much better and car has more predictable stopping power now.

Thanks @Stclark13 ...the only possible explanation is the OEM pads so happy to hear you took care of the issue. Mine aren't squealing down here in FL so I'm going to hold out until Honda introduces the updated pads and replaced them for free.

The pads were so pitted it was crazy. No joke probably 30+ pits on each pad. For me it was below 35 degrees the made noise but more importantly after a few high speed stops the pads felt like they weren’t there....super scary and kind of crappy for a sporty suv. $50 and about 30 mins of work was well worth it.

I can’t imagine a senario that aftermarket pads would void a brake warranty on anything other than the pads which have a warranty themselves anyway. Acura obviously knows they suck and won’t do anything about it. I refuse to keep going to a dealer and have no car for a day while nothing is actually fixed. I have 4K on my car and there was so much pad left on my stock pads I didn’t even need to retract the caliper piston to put the new ones on so it was a super easy swap. No special tools needed.

The only time I've noticed squealing is early mornings / late fall. There is a layer of condensation on the rotors and a bit of surface rust. The brakes squeal and get extra grabby for the first few stops, then return to normal after the rust profile gets scrubbed off.

So different brake pads fix the problem and Acura is still claiming they are working on it? Sounds about right. Based on this link, it looks like the brake pads have been revised already, so it might be worth going to the dealer and making sure you get the updated pads part number.

Or just spend the $50 and try some new aftermarket pads. Just seems annoying to have to change brake pads on a brand new car when it should be a simple fix. I would probably end up just doing it myself if I had a squeak the dealer couldn't fix it after a couple tries. You only lose an hour put them in and popping them out if it doesn't fix the problem.

I agree on a $40k+ car you shouldn’t have to change pads within a few month of purchase but I’ve had my fair share of German cars that will dust so bad your wheels turn black in a week. So I’m used to changing them out pretty quickly.

Well it is a "pad slap" and probably not the "proper" way to do it but if the rotors aren't damage, you probably won't notice any problems. Better than having squealing brakes when you could easily swap pads at home. If different pads actually solve the problem, it would be very disappointing that Acura is taking this long to figure it out. Not sure how anyone could ever defend them in the future regarding other issues when they claim they are working on a solution. Maybe people will have to swap in an aftermarket infotainment system on their own next?

My brakes have been chronically squealy (2013 RDX) for as long as I can remember. The dealership service dept has not been helpful (though they have confirmed my brakes are safe). Online searches seem to indicate this is a common problem. Highly frustrating, especially considering the cost of this vehicle! I have resigned myself to living with it since it's not a safety issue. I too have been told all the usual things: 1) All brakes squeal; 2) Well, WE can't hear it; 3) Acura is looking into this. Acura has been "looking into this" for years, as that was one of the first things I was told when I brought it up.
Well, I don't know why, but my brakes have been quiet as a mouse for the past 3 days. Two things to note: my battery died a few days ago, and I had to leave my car outside overnight in freezing temps. I only noticed the brakes being quiet after I picked up my car from the battery place, though I wasn't paying attention to how they sounded driving to the battery place. Now, I know this place (primarily a tire shop) also works on brakes, but I can't imagine they would do anything without consulting me first, and if they did, surely they would tell me they fixed a problem. My husband said that maybe the freezing temps did something, but that is just a wild guess. Anyway, I have zero idea why my brakes are now quiet, but I hope hope hope this is not a fluke and that it keeps being quiet. I just want to know HOW.
