Is there a way to skip forward/backward through an audio file like an audiobook mp3?

Let's say I have an audiobook mp3 that is an hour long and I want to skip ahead to 34 minutes in. Is there a way to do this? In the past I've seen this capability from some devices, such as a phone, but not others, such as a USB. I am using a USB but would like to know if it is possible in general.

Try holding down, not pressing, the fast forward button. See if that works. It works on an iPod

I just tried that and it worked (it didn't yesterday). However, it only moves at about 2x the normal speed. With a long audio file, that's pretty much useless. Any idea how to speed that up?
