Steering Wheel Controls for Apple Carplay?

Hi! I am considering purchasing a new RDX. I would like to understand what you can and can't do from the steering wheel when it comes to CarPlay. I test drove a car, and it was behaving differently than how my wife claims it worked for her.

Using the steering wheel and the display between the odometer/speedometer, I could scroll between the Acura "Apps" - one of which was CarPlay. But nothing happened when trying to select CarPlay. My wife claims she could get some limited functionality on there, such as skipping songs on Spotify.

Can any owners chime in? Thanks!

You can select Carplay or any other source via the Apps button. The items that appears under the Apps menu are configurable. Once in Carplay, you can skip songs forward and back in any music app. There is also a voice button, which will engage Siri with a long press or the Acura voice recognition with a short press.

When skipping songs, the song title appears in the HUD, but no navigation indications make it to the HUD. That seems reserved only for the built in Nav.

I press and hold the talk button and tell Siri to play whatever song/artist/list I want, then use the wheel to press left or right to skip songs. So yeah there are controls for CarPlay on the steering wheel.

I imagine you could use the scroll wheel wheel to select CarPlay on the apps menu, then use the touchpad to select the playlist or playing now option, and the scroll wheel to control the song choices. I haven’t played much with it. But voice commands work well.

I have found the steering wheel functionality with CarPlay and Bluetooth Audio to be very hit or miss. More often than not, the menu doesn't display the entire album. Sometimes it takes a few songs for the whole album to show up...sometimes it doesn't at all.

Anyone else experience this?

I’ve has pretty good luck with CarPlay with the exception of skips and occasional connectivity on startup. Overall it’s a huge improvement from what I came from.

Thanks for the responses on this. Very helpful. I wonder why I could not get any Carplay functionality at all on the wheel controls when I was there last time.

I'm quite wary about the skips issue that was also mentioned in another thread. That's a real pet peeve of mine.

I’ve believe the steering wheel controls whatever is in the primary screen. For example, if your streaming Spotify but Acura Nav is on the main screen the steering wheel will control the nav.
