"Updates"

In the vehicle menus there is a selection called update or updates. I have seen several of you talking about a Nav update available and it appears you are using a USB device to download it. That leaves me curious what the 'update' in the menus is for. I know on my BMW I would take it in and the dealer would "flash" new transmission software....or whatever. For the BMW Nav, I had to buy a new DVD.
I asked the local Acura dealer what the 'updates' updates exactly, and as I am quickly getting used to, they had no idea. Since I see people using USB to update Nav, does anyone have any idea what would get updated via this feature if done through the dash menu? I have tried updating a couple times to see what happens and it appears there were no updates available.

The OTA updates are for the radio firmware and nothing else. NAV updates are performed via USB and all else by the dealer plugging their laptop into your OBD port.

I'll believe the head unit OTA update paradigm when I see it in action. It was an alleged feature of my previous Honda vehicle, and in the several years I owned the thing not a single update became available OTA, but several updates were installed by the dealer.

I believe infotainment head unit firmware was installed via USB ( after dealer service downloaded the firmware from Honda ), but things like transmission and engine management firmware were installed with the proprietary Honda OBD ( HDS ) tools.

But how do you know when it is available, and do the dealers charge for it, or is it included when you go for any service?

^^^no charge and who knows how we'll be notified. Through My Acura's site? In an e-mail? Checking the radio update process periodically? As I stated in post #2 and @Wander restated in post #3 we'll have to wait to see how this plays out.

For the last two days I've been driving around with the 'System Update' notification showing on the home screen but haven't had time to look into it and do the update - I tried to do it while driving but got a message saying that wasn't allowed.

This morning I went out and the notification was no longer there, second time that's happened. Next time I'm going to make a point of trying the update as soon as I get the notification icon just to see what happens.

Both times it showed up I checked. It went through a process and eventually said that everything was up to date.

Yeah, that's what mine says when I manually check to see if any updates are available.

My about page display D.1.0.4 for software version, but I have read in another thread that some cars have D.1.0.7 version. My car was delivered to dealer late October, so I am not sure why it would not be on the latest software.
