Thoughts on Extended Warranty

Looking back at the first year of the Gen 2 from all indications it was fairly solid without significant issues - BUT - it was not a 'clean sheet' design so had more proven technology incorporated.

Given that the Gen 3 RDX is a 'clean sheet' design and breaking more new ground than did the Gen 2 what are your thoughts on getting an extended warranty?... and when to purchase it if the decision is to go that direction? i.e. Are there any limitations/restrictions on the Acura warranty if it's not purchased along with the vehicle?

I know the argument about putting the money in the bank and use that for repairs but that's becoming less viable when a single component can easily run a couple thousand which is not unheard of in modern vehicles (just 1 shock for my Cadillac SRX was over $600 for parts only) . Either way it's a bit of a crap shoot - save the money and if you don't use it for repairs then 'party hardy', or buy the warranty and if you don't use it it's money down the drain but at least you sleep good in the interim.

I’d like to hear thoughts on this as well. I purchased an extended warranty for the first time ever for my Jeep GC. Yeah I know - different animal and deserving of it. I did not buy at the dealership but found a dealer that sold factory warranties so I paid less than half price for it.
With the amount of tech in this vehicle and the fact I want to keep it for 7-8 years I’d like to find an Acura dealer that would do the same thing.

So if I googled it correctly, the 3G RDX has a 4yr/50K mile warranty with a 6yr/70K drivetrain warranty. Is that correct? If so, I'd probably just stick with that. Any major problems due to it being a "clean-sheet" vehicle are likely going to surface within that time. Once it's about to run out, you can get a 3rd party extended warranty at that time if you want.

I'm a strong believer against extended warranties but I'm a DIYer which I understand not everyone is.

i drive 20-25k miles per year so I could be out of factory warranty in as little as two years. That’s the only reason I would consider it. I’ve not had an Acura before but my wife’s 2007 Honda Pilot did 115k over 7 years without much beyond routine maintenance

The general consensus is to skip the extended warranty on cars from reliable brands like Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus. I drove my two Acuras for over 400,000 miles combined, with no significant problems. The minor problems I had occurred long after an extended warranty would have expired.

I believe you can buy an extended warranty from Honda up to the time the initial warranty expires. As such, it probably makes sense to wait and see how the reliability of the new RDX looks after three years.

For my Audi A4, if I keep it after my lease is up, I probably will get an extended warranty.

same here. But I put 205000, on my tsx and not one issue hat would have been warranty related. In fact the only problem I had is broken fog lights and it was a widespread design issue that acura refused to acknowledge. I think there is a class action lawsuit for it so I’ll get my $2.17 when I’m 53 so I have that going for me which is nice.

Was anyone pitched a "Windshield Warranty"? We were told the OEM Windshield is required if needed to be replaced and costs like $1800. They wanted $1000 for a 48 month warranty. It would fix chips and anything in drivers POV they would replace. Similar to car insurance but with no deductible?

What are your thoughts?

my insurance covers one window a year with no deductable and covers Oem glass. So that doesn’t make sense to get a dealer warranty.

FWIW: If I were the original owner, operator, and maintainer, of any quality vehicle produced today, and operated it, to nearly the conclusion of the factory warranty, and experienced no unique issues, I would TAKE THE RISK, and forgo any extended warranty options. ALSO, KEEP IN MIND, many companies sell extended warranty programs. Reputable companies, often MIMIC the factory sponsored programs, terms and conditions, for considerably less cost, simply, by cutting out the MIDDLE MAN!

Don't waste your money on this. Your insurance should cover with a lower deductible than that. When I bought my 05 TL I was suckered into getting a $500 warranty for the leather seat. It was my first car bought brand new and I was in my early 20s. I'll stick with factory warranties. They can kick rocks for any other extra dealership warranties.

I would check my auto insurance to see if I'm already covered with chip repair and replacement. It might only be a few $$ to add this to your policy if you don't have it. Either way, Acura will have to use the same shop to replace the glass as your private insurance. It just depends on how much $$ Acura will make for the service compared to how much you are already paying your insurance company.

I would also wait until I'm close to my 4/50,000 mile basic warranty is expiring before thinking about an Acura Care extended warranty. Acura sometimes makes a few suspension, drivetrain, electronic, or firmware/software adjustments between 1st and 2nd model years. That doesn't mean every 19 RDX will need those minor upgrades and you could be perfectly fine for +100,000 miles. If it is a major issue, Acura usually provides an 100,000 mile extended warranty down the road like they did with 2nd Gen MDX Adv magnetic suspension or 1st Gen RDX A/C compressor/clutch.

I don't see a downside to waiting as long as the 4yr/50K is available.

LoL. OEM windshield for $1800? I don't know much about the TLX but I highly doubt it has some sort of new-fangled technology that warrants a windshield that expensive. 90% chance you could call up any windshield repair place and they'd quote you $200-$400 at most. The only exception would be if the windshield has some sort of sensors or something like that embedded in it. There are some exotics and high end luxury cars that have things like that. But I don't think the TLX is that high on the totem pole.

What a money grab. Just like the double-priced installed accessories.

Find another dealer.

Just like all of the crap the finance guy tries to bang you for: Window etching, paint protection, wheel insurance ("These wheels cost thousands of dollars and if you hit a curb we'll replace it for free"), leather seat insurance, (in the old days - Rust Protectoin), Extended warranties, etc. These are things the finance guy gets a piece of so he always wants to add them to the sale. It's not easy buy you have to stare him down and say "No thanks" to everything. They are just not worth the extra money.

"It's only a few dollars added to your payment!" - yeah, right.

Go with a wingman, and agree to tell the finance guy ‘no’ to each and every thing he springs on you at the last minute without a clear view as to how much it is exactly, and what a real price should be.

If you have HUD, the windshield is actually that price or more.

The base warranty should cover any gremlins that this new gen has. I opted for extended warranty on my A6 then after reading all the exclusions quickly cancelled it for full refund. We buy Acura's for their reliability and generally that has proven out very well. The only caveat to me is the durability of a I4 Turbo say for 200K miles, but I bet they beat the piss out of these in testing and we will be pleasantly surprised.
