Real time traffic app?

Hello,

Seeking opinions from fellow members on which app offers the best real time traffic conditions updates? XM radio, Waze, Acura Navigation,Apple Maps, Google maps. I live in Southern California. Thanks in advance.

Detailer,

I rely on Waze, hasn't steered me wrong.

Are we able to get XM traffic info on our 3G RDXs? If so, I assume it is an extra fee?

Don’t know. My previous Audi Q5 did have that option but for an additional fee.

Yeah, my wife's '15 Ford Escape has it, free for 5 years from Ford... Also provides real time gas prices. It is a very good traffic app.

Side note, I was considering the Lincoln Nautilus and possibly (same platform) Ford Edge before buying the RDX. Very poor resale values was a big part of my decision.

In a word, NO.

Primary live traffic source is from HERE via HD radio ( data ).

Allegedly, there is a "backup" source via some flavor of internet. It's not clear to me if this is only available if you subscribe to the AT&T in-car WiFi service. Maybe via AcuraLink if you have a current subscription, but I wouldn't count on it. AcuraLink uses the car's cellular device ( telematics unit ), but is a separate subscription from the in-car WiFi service.

If you run apps in Apple CarPlay, they are getting their own traffic info via your cell-phone data plan.

Waze and Google get their info from actual phones moving in the traffic. Waze adds personal reports. In my experience, Waze is better for conditions and Google’s routing is better. If you have an android phone and have location services enabled, or have any phone and are using Waze or Google maps, their computers know how fast you are going, and where your slowdowns are. When you are next on the road, look around and ask yourself how many phones meeting the prior conditions are in the cars around you.

Others cant match it. Even if they are getting better.

Other traffic data providers are starting to crowd-source, including HERE. That's why you get to enable "data sharing" in your 2019 RDX if you want full functionality. Data from your car gets sent back to the collective.

I prefer not to use my phone when I have the Acura system, but at the same time I find the 2019 RDX Acura navigation system to be substantially inaccurate much of the time, and that's when it's actually showing up on the screen. It marginally improved in the last download but not enough to be on the same level as those phone apps.
