RDX vs Volvo XC60

To get everything that my wife wanted in her vehicle, the XC60 would have been $62K. The RDX gave us the same features, minus the massaging seats, for much less, and we ended up with a better looking, American made vehicle. All the reviews describe the XC60 as European or Swedish, when in reality the vehicles currently sold in the US are made in China. After sitting in the Volvo, my wife feel in love with it. When I eventually concluded with couldn't afford it, she asked "then why did you show it to me?". I was so glad the new RDX appeared and gave her the same joy at a price we could afford.

My wife and I narrowed it down to the RDX Advance and the XC60 T5 with the packages that would make it as close to "apples to apples" as possible. Found the vehicle locally and took it out for a drive. MSRP on the RDX was around $47K. XC60 MSRP was around $54K. My wife thought the RDX was more comfortable (contrary to what Redline stated in the review) and had features the XC60 didn't that were important to her but liked the XC60 as well. I wasn't willing to step up to a T6 or add additional packages to match the features on the RDX that took it outside the range of what we wanted to spend. In the end, we love the RDX and it has been trouble-free to date. They would sell me the XC60 for about $3500 more than the RDX but, to us, it wasn't worth the extra cash. In addition, as B25Nut stated, once we both found out it was made in China versus Europe...it made the decision even easier!

My deal breaker on XC60 is the infotainment system. It is sluggish and UI is confusing. It’s like using old Android tablet. There is lag time when you swipe. This is no iPad experience.
another was made in China but since announcement of tariffs, Volvo has already said they will bring America market to Sweden.

I was looking at the XC60 and was so close to buying it. But with all the options I wanted in it versus the RDX, it came out about $7k more and I couldn't justify spending that much more for a vehicle that is similar. Do you really need massaging seats? I don't understand why that was pressed so much in this video. And the comparison was completely off. The RDX should have been compared to a T5 Momentum or Inscription. It makes no sense to compare a top end trim of one vehicle to a mid level trim on another. I usually love Redline reviews but there was almost no point to this video.

I too looked at a comparable XC60 and found it wanting and measurably more expensive fitted out the way I wanted it. It was more comfortable, but the RDX’s seats are plenty comfortable. I also did not have faith that reliability and repair/maintenance of the XC60 would be similar to the RDX, but that is just an opinion, and I have no facts (yet) to support that.

One last tidbit.
Along the way I missed the announcement by Volvo that they will stop production of the gasoline engines and only make hybrid or electric cars, starting in 2019.

Volvo is done with entirely traditional engines and exclusively gas-powered vehicles, the company announced. By 2019, Volvo group intends to offer only either fully electric or hybrid engines on all new models, making it the first automaker to commit to using only alternative drive trains.
The end of the solely combustion engine-powered car did seem like an eventual inevitability, given the advantages of electric and hybrid from a manufacturing and performance standpoint, and given the industry’s heavy investment in autonomous vehicle tech. But for Volvo to commit to going entirely hybrid and electric just two years from now is still the strongest sign yet we’ve seen that the purely combustion engine’s days might be numbered sooner, rather than later.

They're rolling out 48 volt "mild" hybrids across the lineup. They'll be burning fossil fuels for years to come.
