Volvo: XC60 News

2007 Volvo XC60 Concept - - by Marty Padgett - - Source: The car connection

Volvo says the new XC60 concept car coming to the 2007 Detroit auto show in January will presage a new crossover due to join its lineup in 2009.

The Swedish subsidiary of Ford offers that the XC60 is a companion piece to the C30 hatchback shown at various auto shows since last year, and going on sale in early 2007.

With the sporting intention of a coupe and the all-weather capability of an XC Volvo, the XC60 concept is a fairly good indication of how the production XC60 will look when it joins the company's lineup near the end of the decade.

Volvo calls the XC60 a "small premium utility vehicle," and predicts that while few vehicles are in the segment now (think Acura RDX and BMW X3), the segment will expand to at least 10 competitors, from Audi's Q5 to the anticipated Cadillac and Saab compact crossovers.

The XC60 is also the first conduit for Volvo's new "City Safety" system of occupant protection technology. The system will cut down on low-speed collisions by using automatic braking up to 18.6 mph. Volvo says if the potential accident happens at less than 9.3 miles per hour, the system could avert it entirely.

The XC60's styling is pitched at the same active-lifestyle crowd as the Acura and BMW offerings already in the niche. However, Volvo's interior is a sleeker thing entirely. The concept's cabin wears crisp white leather, with gun-slitted seats and a unique center console that's influenced in style and materials by the iPod.

Stay tuned for more on the XC60 in TheCarConnection's coverage of the Detroit auto show.

DAAMMNNN!!!! I'm loving this concept. The exterior is near production ready; I like the design cues on the lower front fascia taken from the Ford Iosis concept. The interior console is unbelievably cool, though it won't make it to production, ofcourse. This almost makes me wish I had a wife just so I could get it for her.

I hope Volvo keeps the production vechile as close to the concept as possible. It has the potential to kill in this segment (still small, with only three vehicles, but not for long).

... hmm, considering how much I hate the small SUV crossover things, I unfortunately have to confess that this looks pretty darn good. Surprising that Volvo who used to build the ugliest cars on the planet are consistently churning out nicer and nicer designs. Either they're getting better or I'm getting old and stodgy...

Its looks familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on what the other new vehicle was- it was a new euro only, maybe Seat, either way its nice. The interior looks like they need some help on how to reinvent themselves, cause volvo interiors are nothing great and this looks like its shaping up the same even if they kept it lit up like the concept.

Think volvo has had some nice designs over the last couple years, this only adds to them.

Guys, I dont see anything new with the interior design. The general design of the interior can be found in the S40 (with respect to the design of the center dash). The differences in materials and the sharper look is there because this is a concept and it can get away with unrealistic interior materials used.

I would like to see one change though, a little more ground clearance. Right now the design barely escapes from looking like a tall wagon.

Post Images leaked...

From WCF...

Last week we had reported that Volvo will be revealing the production version of its XC60 SUV at Geneva next month. Subsequently, rumours were going around that Volvo will be releasing the official images and press release of the SUV on February 20th, but it appears that the images are already spreading faster than anything through the Internet four days before the intended date.

The Volvo XC60 Concept was first shown at the 2007 Detroit Motor Show, and in the past months we have caught various test mules around which provided us a good preview of the production version. Today, the leaked images reveal that Volvo is keeping the SUV as close as possible to the concept, except for some missing curves on the side profile. No technical details were found anywhere, but this BMW X3-rival is planned to hit showrooms during the second half of 2008.

LOL I as thinking Ikea too.

This is probably the best looking little luxury ute out there. Way better than the RDX and X3 and proportionally correct, unlike the EX35 which sits too low to the ground IMO.

This is a great looking little CUV, both in and out. It'd place it second behind the EX, but ahead of the RDX and X#.

Very nice looking--it's got smooth, curvy lines. But it is just a bit too "slinky" and a bit too "cute"...no?

Based on looks alone, give me an LR2 (or an RDX).

Just as we were about to jump on the bandwagon and put up leaked images of the new XC60, Volvo went and released the official images and press release. Ready to makes its debut at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, the 2009 Volvo XC60 will be launched in Europe in fall 2008 with the U.S. launch set for the first quarter of 2009. We have to say, this is probably the best looking car Volvo’s ever created.

The 2009 XC60 will fit under the larger XC90 and will take on the small crossover segment. Of course Volvo is always touting its safety features and the big news this year is the City Safety system. The City Safety system helps the driver reduce the effects of low-speed impacts that are most common in city traffic. For example, if the car is about to hit the vehicle in front and the driver doesn’t react, the car automatically applies the brakes.

The “safest and most sensual Volvo ever,” will go on sale in the U.S. with a single engine; the turbocharged T6 which produces 281 horsepower. All Wheel Drive with Instant Traction will be standard.

I really like the SUV. It trumps all others in the class, IMO, now that I've seen the production pics. Very nice indeed.

Quite. Although, I still really love the Audi, Acura, and Infinti versions as well. Just another nice choice to have when shopping for an SUV.
