RDX not recognizing fob in close proximity

Key fob is in my pocket and I can't unlock the door or activate the hands free tailgate after a few tries. Then I tried again by standing real close to the door/tailgate, no dice. It was only after I pulled my keys out of my coat pocket that the car recognized the fob and unlocked the doors. I've had this happen to me on and off, anyone encountered this too?

Might be low battery in fob or phone is in the same pocket. Cell phones cause interference with the key fob.

I just experienced this myself recently. I usually carry my phone in a belt holster, but since I have been wearing a heavy winter coat, I just drop my phone into the coat pocket.

If my phone is in the same pocket as my FOB, the doors unlock only about 1 try out of 5. If the phone and FOB are in different pockets, the doors unlock every time.

If there is moisture all over the handle area / high humidity it often will not work. I just get used to pressing the unlock on the fob once in a while.

Also, LED lighting can interfere with the touch locking/unlocking. In my garage, when the LED ceiling lights are on, it will not unlock when I am standing in one place, but will in others. If the lights are off, it works great. (same for the garage door opener... it too is affected some.)

I notice that this happens more often when it’s cold out with me no matter where my phone is. I never have the phone in the same pocket as my keys; either my phone would be in my back pant pocket or my coat pocket.

I have this problem a lot with both fobs regardless of battery life. Seems to be more frequent in the last few months and I'm not sure if it's weather related or if the sensors have been going bad. Happens about 75% of the time.

Also, when exiting my car with the fob in my pocket, the car will beep profusely at me even if I'm still within a few feet from it. This happens about 25% of the time.

Both happen in my garage or outdoors, with the fob in a pocket by itself or with other items, during the summer and winter. I garaged my car all last winter while living abroad so I didn't get a feel for it then. Once spring roles around, I'll have a better idea if it's weather related.

You might have the “walk away” feature on where it automatically locks your car when you walk away from your car.

I recently started experiencing issues with the key system where I never had them before. We put in a new battery, but the issues remain. It doesn't matter if I have my phone with me or not, sometimes the system just doesn't respond quickly or at all. I did not have this one time in the first 6 months of ownership, now the system is maybe 50% reliable. I have to bring mine in for service soon and they will be taking a look at it.

I do and I want to keep that feature. The rapid beep I was referring to is an intentional "safety" feature to alert the driver they have walked too far away from their car while it's still unlocked but it is flawed. It shouldn't rapidly beep when I'm still within a couple feet away from car. To prevent this from happening, I have to close my door, wait a couple seconds, then walk away.

I've also noticed this, and particularly when using my AirPods. If I have been using my AirPods while walking to my car, then put the AirPods back in the case, and then in my pocket with my keyfob, then sometimes the car won't unlock when I grab the handle. I have to take my keys out of my car to unlock. I think it is easily interfered with.

Looks like TLX owners also had this issue back in 2016. Everyone points to phone interference. Someone mentioned wallet, which may be my culprit since I keep it with my fob in the same jacket pocket when wearing a jacket. There are several threads for the same issue with Tesla, Lexus, Dodge, Toyota, etc. Didn't see any threads for Hyundai and Kia. I guess this is yet another thing that Hyundai does right because I never had issues with the '16 Tucson.

I am experiencing the same issue with 2017 RDX - both keyfobs experience the issue. Replaced batteries multiple times. Still have the issue. I will be taking to the dealer soon, however wanted to see if you had any news to report from your dealer visit. Thanks

This happens to me at a specific gas station I sometimes go to. Probably there is some cell tower nearby.

Change the battery?
Also happens if you are carrying the key fob and your cell phone in the same hand. I have had this happen a few times.
