They're expecting some "sell down" for the '20 MDX to come this week.
Hi Gear Head,
May I ask why you want to trade into the MDX? I currently have a 1'9 SH-AWD Tech and am considering doing the opposite of you by trading to the 2021 RDX ADV SH-AWD. I just wanted to ask if it is because you need something bigger or if you weren't happy with the RDX. For me, the MDX is nice, but as a single person with no children, I don't need anything as big as the MDX. The deals on the RDX were awful when I looked to leasing it back in 2019.

We went for the RDX because it was a "new design", and were satisfied by the number of people that drew differentiation to the CR-V and like the sharpness of the cabin displays and wanted to gain 20%-25% (conservatively) fuel reduction from a GMC Acadia Denali.

What we've found - and our car just turned 10K miles yesterday:
1. The steering is steering is numb and has little build up, but then sharply shifts/over-steers
2. The ride is rough. You feel and hear everything from the road, and it's made worse by the fake "piped in" engine sounds
3. We're not big people but the seats are tight and we both get leg cramps driving. My kids say the back seat is like a park bench and complain at any ride over 20 min.
4. The collision mitigation system, lane departure, and safety system in general is so hypersensitive that it needs to be shut off most of the time. Similarly equipped, our Volvo and Jeep safety systems function without the distraction of the Acura's
5. Fuel economy is an abomination and in keeping with what two dealerships I've visited are themselves seeing: We average 17 MPG in the winter which is equal to the GMC, and we average 22 MPG on all highway drives. -4 or 5 from the GMC that was 6 pas/V6. That is without 10 speeds, little engine, and much more car overall.
6. The center console is way too big and confining
7. There are so many weight saving measures that don't help MPG: Hatch is composite, hood aluminum, think sheet-metal, and paint finish is not competitive with any other luxury makes
8. Interior door panels creak
9. Acura QC is in trouble. Our car was delivered with misaligned hatchback and body panels at delivery.
10. We've been back for repairs 10X in 6 mos, starting with new control arm bushings at 700 miles. Not everything is resolved, and the 10 speed transmission is now giving us problems.

We hadn't even considered the MDX, but have had one as a loner so many times from the dealership we learned that even though it is longer in its model run, it's a solid good performer that actually returned higher MPG (we had it for 1.5 week stretch just two weeks ago) than does our RDX. It is quieter, more comfortable, and much more spacious. The only trade off I see is in the dated infotainment screen resolution.

I would say yes. That's what we paid OTD here in NY back in July 2019 before there was a pandemic and these things were selling very well, plus the 2020's were just starting to roll onto lots, so it wasn't a leftover either. I'd definitely try negotiating that price down and shopping around.

Absolutely could be better. I’m shopping for the same exact car and was quoted $43,800 (adjusted price row) as a starting point yesterday when I walked in. Truecar says average discount is 10% near me, which is nearly $5k off. You’re only getting a 5% discount.

Also, this dealer is killing you with add-ons. Remove it all.

* Nitrogen and door trim should be free, if you want it. Otherwise remove it. Don’t let them tell you they can’t remove it.

* A local shop can tint the front windows for $100, so remove that markup and search for a shop yourself after you buy.

* The rear bumper appliqué is a $60 part that you attach with a sticker, so $199 is insane.

All told, I’d counter by removing $650 in excess add-ons and requesting a 10% discount off MSRP, putting you in the $45k ballpark OTD. White on red A-spec are easy to find, so don’t be afraid to call the next closest dealer.

in addtion to jmhumr's comment above, research the max dealer fee your state allows car dealership to charge. $699 is high.

Thank you guys for the information.

I shopped around and found a cheaper dealership in my state of NC. Sent that quote to my local dealership to see what they can do. I don't qualify for loyalty, student or military. And got them to remove the extra add-ons.

Thoughts? This is a FWD though versus the other quote i had for SHAWD.

Also @Monster_HK, the state of NC doesn't have any limits on dealer fees.

I just got the same car but with AWD. Starting at 47,625, they took $5225 off + another $1000 for dealer incentive (shown separately because it is taxed)? Note that part of the discount ($2000) was for me to use Acura financing which didnt have a great rate despite my great credit. it still made sense to take the deal though because the $2000 was worth more than the higher rate would cost me over the life of the loan.

I'm in suburban Chicago.

I forgot there is $1000 in there for conquest as well. My tsx was too old (traded it) but we have a newer Pilot that qualified.

Let's say I'm eligible for the $1000 conquest incentive. Is it better to withhold that info from the dealer until the end of the negotiation, so that they don't just roll that into their discount, or should I mention my eligibility up-front?

Make a couple of payments and then shop around for a better loan rate. It's what I did. You are under no obligation to keep a high car loan. If the vehicle has under 7000 miles banks consider it a new car loan. I dropped my rate by more than 50% when I switched the loan to my credit union.

yep, I believe I have to make 3 payments. Good tip in the mileage, I didn’t know that.

I went to McGrath in Westmont, which is where I got my old TSX, and Advantage in Naperville (was called Continental until a few weeks ago). I ended buying from McGrath. I’m in Wheaton and started at Advantage, but they didn’t seem to want to talk price unless I was in person. I finally got some pricing out of them and wasn’t blown away so I ended up contacting McGrath via their website. Their initial “internet” price was better, but did include the Acura financing incentive that comes with a high rate.

In my experience they ask you those incentive questions before assembling an offer. So your only choice is to lie or "misunderstand" and then bring it up after the offer. I'm sure that would peeve off some salespeople. You might be left waiting in the lobby for 2 hours for them to install your temp tags, haha.

Wow. Looks like I dodged a bullet. We had a 2G RDX that we liked, and really liked the 3G RDX on paper, but the terrible road noise during the test drive killed it for us. We ended up getting an MDX Sport Hybrid that we absolutely love. Great engine/transmission combo, quiet, refined, powerful, spacious, and excellent fuel economy both city and highway. Much better than 2G RDX in city and combo and at least as good for highway road trips.

Finally! After about four months of research and price shopping, I finally got my white-on-red A-Spec SH-AWD. $39,518 (17% off) before TTL and heated steering wheel add-on. Yes, that dealer fee is criminal - screw Virginia and their refusal to set limits. Regardless, I couldn’t be happier. They were not willing to budge on accessories, but now that’s Santa’s problem.

2021 RDX Advance SH-AWD Performance Red

MSRP: $49,525
Sale Price: $45,118
Rebate: $1,000
Dealer Fee: $699
+ tax + government fee

I didn't qualify for anything except the 1.9% financing incentive, but I had previously bought from this dealer before. To get this price, I had to finance through Acura for at least 4 payments.

Here's an Auto Nation quote I just received on a 2021 SH-AWD Advance White/Ebony. I am not a current Acura owner so am getting the Conquest rebate and finance rebate. My local dealers are not budging so I have to travel 300 miles to pick up the vehicle but that is worth a few thousand bucks. If anyone has any tips on how I can do better than this, please let me know. I am in Portland, Oregon.

I was wrong about the Portland area dealerships. Check around, they got very close to this quote and then the dealer in Salem Oregon matched it and threw in all weather mats so I took the deal. Thank you again for everyone that has posted on this thread as your experiences were very helpful.

That sounds like a good deal assuming you are able to stay within the 10,000 mile per year limit.

Got this deal and have a sweet new 2021 RDX SH-AWD w/ Tech!
I'm lucky to easily remain within the 10K mile limit every year.
Paid an extra $180 for x3 servicing (could not convince them to include it to me for free) which includes oils changes, tire rotations etc. etc. I doubt I could get away with $60 at a 3rd party serving place anyway, so I think it's worth it (though I'm sure some will say I was cheated lol)
Hope this quote helps someone.

What would you choose:
OTD prices for both:

RDX AWD W/technology package:
2021: 43700
2020: 42000

Both new, both exact same config.

2021 RDX SH-AWD TECH in SoCal

Reached out to several dealers in the Greater LA area and got a surprisingly wide range of offers for a 2021 Platinum White Pearl/Ebony SH-AWD Technology Package.

In short, they all indicated different pricing for the following scenarios from lowest to highest pricing:

Acura “Special” Financing (about 4.9% APR)
All Cash (Your own Financing)
Acura “Promotional” Financing (1.9% APR)

After some back and forth with many dealers, settled on one that gave me the largest discount off MSRP (without ANY haggling or sneaky add-on) that also included Acura’s “promotional” financing. Got $4900 off MSRP. Every other dealer was between $800-2500 more. The dealer I settled on ended up with a price that was only $150 more than the best offer I got that required the 4.9% rate. Call me lazy but it was worth not having to juggle refinancing to bite on the offer.

It was kind of the usual fun with other non competitive dealers saying the offer I got was impossible and likely I was going to be disappointed. 🤷‍♂️

Final:
MSRP $44,625
Discounted Price Before Fees $39,725

I also got another $1000 rebate towards the Down for being a “Conquest” owner of a 2011 or newer Honda.

Hope this info helps others!

2021 awd tech

2021 AWD TECH dealers in Ohio won't go under $38,500 + tax (after all loyalty and dealer incentives). That should equate to $41,300 out the door. I saw prices lower quite a bit lower over the summer.

Is that the best I'll get now? I'm ok driving to another state or waiting.

Island Acura in Wantaugh. The initial price that was quoted was about 2-3k higher. However, they matched another dealers price. There was a $1500 rebate. Also I traded in an old 2006 CRV and got 2750 on the trade.

Buying Group for 2021 Acura RDX SH-AWD with Tech Package for Houston Metro Area is live and accepting members to join until end of March.

Just a note of 2021 used CPO (~1100 miles) Advanced Blue was 40,500 (plus taxes, reg) for me in Boulder, CO. Had been loaner according to sales guy, built in October. Carfax looked that way too. So far enjoying a lot. Got this deal in Febuary.

Picking up a 2021 FWD Tech package tomorrow. My wife really wanted Fathom Blue Pearl/Greystone, so our dealer had to get it from a dealer 120 miles away. I am a haggler and enjoy the back and forth, but my wife knew what she wanted. I think we could have done a little better with something on the lot, but it was a really great no haggle experience considering they had to get it from another dealer.

MSRP - 42,325
Doc Fee - 599
Discount - 3105
Tax - 1493
Tag - 16.50
Conquest - 1000

40,329 OTD

Cool. I got the same deal in Chicago! 2021 RDX SH-AWD Tech; Modern Steel. Total OTD was < 40k which was my target.
I sold my leased car to Carmax (they purchase from Honda on my behalf at my Payoff price) and got 4k for my leased 2019 CRV as it was very less driven in 2 yrs.
