Infotainment hardware difference 2019-2021

So I was bored, and wanted to find out all the details from my 2020 ASPEC infotainment:

DENSO Part Number TN4687005316
Processor: ARMv7 Rev 2 (v7I) dual core. HW DENSO 74x mid, Revision ES2.0. (Need to go to 3 button, then go to unit-check, and select ICU screen)
Android Version 5.1.1
Kernel Version 3.14.51
Acura Software Version D1.2.2

Can someone from 2019 or 2021 please post the same information so we can compare if Acura is making updates to the hardware.

The odds are not good for this bet, 2021 are rolling out with 1.4, if everything was the same, the 1.4 would become available for everyone.
They either need more time to make sure 1.4 works on 19-20, or they are done with us, and we will be stuck on 1.2.x, maybe they will release a patch 1.2.3 for us and etc.

Last year when the 2020’s were coming out and it was learned the new 2020 builds had a newer infotainment software that newer version became available to the “existing” fleet for an update. Time will tell if this 1.4.3 will follow the same path.

I hope you are right, let’s see if hardware is different in 2021

The docs from Texas Instruments indicate newer versions of that chip are pin-compatible, but I doubt there will be a big hardware upgrade. I would hope at least there will be OS improvements to bring faster response and slicker graphics.

isn't ArmV7 like 7 years old 32bit processor?

It is, and the TI SOC is from circa-2014. It wasn't even top shelf stuff at the time; it was most definitely a step behind the Nvidia Tegra 4.

Yeah, the sluggish response of the Infotainment system has always been there from day one and still is with us despite a few SW updates. I still maintain the hardware is the main culprit. You cant fix underpowered processors with a SW fix, at least not in our RDX's. I still have weird issues to this day.

you can fix it with SW, but to do this you need to want write it in low level languages and not some Java crap. It will be more expensive as they need to hire more talented developers. They can also make customizations to kernel. They not
going to do it, too expensive. They will just get faster chip in the next gen

comes down more to cost and reliability. This isn’t some phone you can throw away in a year, it needs to last 10+ years of cold and heat cycles, etc. I believe a lot of time they will use older more proven technologies and chips that have had more testing or meet certain criteria. A lot of these car computer components are supplied by denso or companies alike, and they need to make the hardware worthy of lasting a long time and having the ability to handle the many hours or use that a car gets.

Still waiting for a 2021 owner to post their hardware version 🙂

Ugh, I hate Java with a burning passion. Terrible language; had to program with it in school.

The only difference on my 2021 is the Acura software version.

Processor: ARMv7 Rev 2 (v7I) dual core. HW DENSO 74x mid, Revision ES2.0.

Android Version 5.1.1
Kernel Version 3.14.51
Acura Software Version D1.4.3

nice, hopefully they will have it for older years soon. Maybe they did not want to push big update on so many cars at once in case there are issues.

Interesting to note that the D1.4.3 would indicate this is the 3rd version of D1.4.x
So D1.4.1 and D1.4.2 preceded it in beta testing, before they decided to go live with .3

its possible that 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 never made it outside Acura internal testing.

The last number typically represents patches (i.e. bug fixes), and it's not uncommon to skip a patch or two altogether if the newer one enters testing/verification before the older one even gets deployed.

Or, it could be that the other versions didn't actually fix the issue or introduced even more issues (at this point I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case), in which case you'd expect them to skip that version.

’multi quote’ the first sets of quotes, but only ‘quote’ the last one.

we get these little joys where we can find them.

(It is considered poor form to edit someone else’s quotes in a multi quote. But, this being the internet, it is done.)

How? this is based on Android. I know what you are saying but unless you switched the underly OS, Java is going to be your only option.

Android does have an NDK that supports C and C++, but it's typically only used for CPU-intensive things, which an infotainment UI most definitely isn't. The added cost and slower development speed of writing it in C isn't close to being worth the performance gains, especially for a brand that competes on price and value.

The OS is a strip down version of Linux. The lower languages are always possible, but its expensive and need better talent. I am sure the SW development is handled by different company all together that is contracted by Acura.

russianDude mentioned this in the original post but here you go:
  1. Press and hold the three buttons (back/home/card) on the upper row of the touchpad.
  2. A screen with two blocks popped up, select the lower one.
  3. Go to "Unit Check" on the next page, then "ICU" on the following one.
Pretty sure you will see the same HW spec as 19-20. The infotainment changes over the years are mainly on the meter (instrument panel) and the CAN gateway.

Thanks for the clarity! I didn't know what "3 button" meant!

2021 TLX A-Spec
DENSO 74x mid
rev: ES2.0
Processor: ARMv7 Rev 2 (v7I)
Android Version ???
Kernel Version ???
Acura Software Version D1.3.5 (July 24, 2020)

I couldn't locate the Android and Kernel version since it wasn't part of that ICU screen. I found the Acura version under "Bootloader Info."

Are the wireless updates via the built-in 4G hotspot (which I haven't activated) or can it be done with the phone connected to CarPlay? I currently don't have hotspot capability on my phone but can prob update at home over WIFI.

Updates can be done over the built-in 4G, WiFi, or by a USB stick. You do not need to purchase the AT&T hot spot plan to use the update system.
