Nothing was mentioned about an 8k interval or being due for that 3rd oil change.

But assuming that's true - 8k is less bad than 12k for the interval, but still bad. It would be less bad if the oil levels are being checked regularly. Part of my rationale for frequent oil changes is that you can spot warning signs (oil consumption, fuel dilution etc.) before they turn into bigger problems.

I agree 4-5k is reasonable, especially given the age and mileage. With 5k intervals on my 1G RDX the oil comes out looking very dark each time.

 

Yes, I am also finding that oil comes out nasty and smelling with gas even after 4k miles. I change oil filter every other time, got it down to be very quick,
dont even raise car on jacks
