Body Flex popping
Body Flex popping
Anyone experiance a popping noise while driving slowly in or out of a driveway or an approch of a business. Sounds like s popping noise in the roof area. Nothing is leaking but sounds like the body is flexing. Unknown strange noise.
The consensus seems to be that the panoramic sunroof makes the roof structure weak or something like that.
I have heard the noise when driving out of our driveway forwards at an angle, not sure what it is exactly, sounds like it could be the moonroof
A few of us have experienced this. My dealer's Service Adviser told me they are aware of this back in September 2019, but no solution at this time. I would just check with my dealer about this (and the squeaky brake) every few months or so.
SUNROOF POPS but only when closed
I have the what I think is sunroof popping as I hit inclined driveways/ramps.
So today I opened the sunroof prior to hitting the same ramp I previously heard popping - no popping occurred when the roof was open. It seems the sunroof flexes differently than the roof structure and that is the pop.

We had the popping sound in our RDX. We took it in and they replaced the sunroof Frame. Since then the sounds seems to be almost gone (maybe completely gone), but I'm waiting for colder weather to evaluate. The problem seemed to happen in colder weather more than warm weather and the fix happened in mid Summer.
NOTE: The dealership stated the sunroof frame was cracked.

sound is very alarming
It can sound anything form a little pop to a loud grating crack. It must have to due with how fast you hit the angled ramp/bump. If I hit one front tire first (like turning into a driveway) it happens - but never if both front tires hit at the same time.
My guess is that as you hit 1 tire and the body flexes, the glass flexes at a different rate and a part of the glass slides against the rest of the frame or roof structure and like an earthquake, it is either a 100% pop or a time released multi-pop creak.
The creak is the worst as it goes on long enough that you think the next sound is catastrophic shatter of entire sunroof.
- While I don't really expect it to shatter, I have heard of 1 on this forum where it did and I have read other cars having same issue. Lots of cars are going to this super sunroof.
I live in Florida so it is basically always warm/hot. I don't think it is more/less prominent when it was cooler.

I've had this "popping" issue since day 1 of ownership. As others have mentioned, when going up steep incline on one wheel. I now try to avoid angling in/out of driveways.
I'm also getting some popping noise when i open the rear hatch, right when it opens up I hear 1-2 popping noise. I don't know if this is all related to moon roof visor mechanism.
Doenst anyone think that maybe this is normal to hear a pop since its a glass roof and flex does happen? i havent owned a car with a glass roof so i dont know if it is normal, but that what came to mind when i heard it. so i never really got worried about it.
but if it flexes than noise would occur, as long as it doesnt leak than why the issue? it's like saying i dont mind hitting the baseball with the bat but there should be no sound when i do it.
My friend's MB GLC, which should be same class as RDX, doesn't have any issues to it at all.
I think Acura really should fix this soon.
My wife had MB GLA250 with a panoramic roof and never once had issues or sound coming out of it. Of course it is a smaller car so should have less flex, but still, I don't think this popping noise issue is acceptable.

Seems like all the 2019-2020 RDX have this issue then.... has anyone have any response from Acura directly talking about this matter? because if its not normal and could cause future issues, than this would cost Acura Alot for the recall. all i know is this new chassis is alot stronger than most other's in it's class so i dont know if this has any impact on the flexing and the glass roof.
Is that what the noise is from? body flexing? I heard a loud popping noise as I exited the car in my garage. I thought something dropped in the garage. Looked around, couldn't find anything. Will pay more attention.
No not at all. I've had a sunroof in every car I've ever owned and have never heard any strange noises from the roof. I also owned a vehicle with a panoramic sunroof and still no strange sounds.
I have a 2019 13,400 miles and get a "clunk" every morning going down the driveway and turning. This started somewhere the 8k mile mark. One "clunk" going to the right and a double"clunk" going to the left. Never happens on level surfaces, only when going over a grade change and turning. Almost sounds like something is sliding from one side to the other. I have an appointment at the end of the month for and oil change and will have the service department look at it. I'll let everyone know if there is a resolution
So, did anyone get a solution to the popping sound. My 2019 RDX has been popping by the driver side hatchback top area for over a year. Of course the dealership says they can't replicate the sound at their shop, however a tech came to my house and heard the sound. Always happens driving down the driveway turning left onto my street as the left rear wheel comes off the driveway lip (pop). never fails.

I picked up the vehicle over 2 months ago, the invoice from the dealership showed $4500 charge for first time doing the repair, and $3500 for redoing it again, of course my cost was zero, but it was 8K that the dealer charged to Acura to repair it. No more water coming into the car and surprisingly no more popping or flexing sound or whatever you guys call it.
So the repair to seal the water leak fixed the popping sound. I went from hearing it every time when pulling out from the driveway and going over the curb to not hearing it again even once in over 2 months since the track assembly of the moon-roof was replaced. Again, the car didn't go in for the popping sound repair but the repair was done as a byproduct of the water getting into the car through the moon-roof opening. What is more troubling is that dealer had to repair the issue twice as the parts that where delivered first time were defective, same defect as the one they were trying to address.
wow, thank you for the detailed answer. The pop noise does come from back top corner area (drivers side). I'll look into it more and talk to American Honda Corp, as I am going into arbitration with them. But, would like to get it fixed instead.
The solution for the flex-popping sound is the moon roof assembly replacement $4500. I had the loud pop every time I pulled out from my driveway like so many others. One day, I noticed a streak of water on the left side (drivers side) back roof liner in the corner where roof liner meets the moon roof glass. Took the car to the dealer for warranty repair for water leak, (obvious sign of water on the headliner). Dealer disassembled the moon-roof and found the track to be defective, ordered the new track, tested the car and same issue appeared, had to contact technical service corporate or whatever they call them, new parts arrived and they put the moonroof together yet again.

Yep. Same noise I hear. It was much much worse for me (at first), but had dealership replace the sunroof frame. Now it is a minor pop (as you hear in your video). If it get worse, I will take it back in again.
had my sun roof assembly replaced 6 months ago under warranty for water getting into the car, popping noise was there everytime before replacement, no noise even once after that, 6 months without an issue, I consider this fixed
Psst. Hey, buddy, I'll fix your sunroof for $1000. I got one right here.
Could you provide the dealership name? Going to have Sterling McCall Acura in Houston, TX give them a call. Was able to replicate the sound with the assistant manager in the car. Your help is greatly appreciated.
