Hey all. Normally, I'm in the camp of not buying extended warranties. But my wife uses her car for work, and it tends to get dinged up, and seats eventually rip, and drinks and food gets spilled...and there my be a puppy in our future...

I bought a 2024 RDX Advance this weekend. The dealership was good, but the F&I guy was new and not very good at explaining anything or providing detailed info. So I passed on everything he offered.

That said, I'm interested in exploring Appearance Protection Contracts that cover rips and tears in the seats, and want to see if any of your dealerships offered it to you, and if so, could you share it with me so I can contact them to purchase after the fact?

 

How in the world does someone rip a seat? In 60 years of driving and probably two dozen vehicles I have only had one small rip and that was due to a dog.

Anyway, AAA has some plans you might want to investigate. Also, because I shopped Volvo when I bought my 2022 RDX, I aware that they had a "appearance" plan around $800 to $1200 depending on the deductible you selected and some options like wheel coverage. .That by the way was for one year term, although if you opted for multiple years there was a generous break in the pricing. For instance what I had priced was $800 for one year, $900 for two years, and about $1100 four years..

 

Well...I'm only 50, so I've been driving for only 34 years, and because we hold on to our cars, seats tend to rip...I'm driving on a ripped seat right now. And we just traded in my wife's car and it had a rip in the seat as well. Both seats ripped around 70K miles.

Both were Subarus (Legacy and Outback, Limited trims)...and as I've come to learn owning two 2016 models, the Subaru quality is not really there, which is reflected in their low price points. I have not decided to get the coverage, but I still want to explore it.

 

Sounds more to me like crappy seat quality in the subies vs something you should be worried about.

I know that ripped/cracked seats was a MASSIVE issue for basically every company in the mid 2000' for some reason (I assume the switch from genuine leather to plastic coated leather) but I really haven't heard of it being an issue in modern cars until this post.

 

Short of their top of the line models, Subaru has the worst seats in the automotive industry!!

My biggest issue with the leather seats and steering wheel comes from my keys and knives. I always have my keys clipped to my belt, typical Dad/Janitor style with 15-20 (half who know what they are). I always have pocket knife in my front right pocket and usually another on my belt. If Im not careful when I go to sit down, or dont take my keys off first, I have scratched and scuffed seats and my steering wheels from my "accessories."

 

The cost of OEM replacement seats are surprisingly reasonable. Don’t waste your money on a protection plan.

Also, if you insist on letting a dog ruin your $45k purchase, the OEM rear seat covers are a good investment.

 

Thanks for finding that! Assuming the red A-Spec seats are what the list as "(combined)(madder red)" for $600 I could get all new covers for my driver seat. Not a bad price to refresh it once I pass 100k or so.

 

Simply decline all optional protection packages, its a rip off, nothing to debate
