2017 MDX Infotainment System Blank Screens

Hi,

Re: 2017 MDX, Elite w/ Navigation

I don't know if others have this issue before, but I've tried searching this forum and can't seem to find it as most of the previous responses seem to point to a DVD reader issue for the Navi system. However I believe my car uses harddrive for Navi system.

Just today, the when turned on both screens in the center console went shows blank.
I am not able to operate the Front or Rear Entertainment System and Navigation does not show up.
Fuse Diagrams are full of acronyms which I can't seem to find clearly defined fuse location for the infotainment system.
I've pulled fuses from all (5) fuse box and can't find any burned fuses:
(2) Fuse Box under dash at driver's seat
(1) Fuse Box under dash at passenger
(2) Fuse Box inside engine compartment.

Entertainment system is currently out of warranty as the vehicle has 105,000 km.
Any help pointing me in the right direction before taking to the dealer is appreciated.

Thanks,

Just adding more info:
-Rear camera does not work
-Read DVD player does not work
-Radio functions does not work
-The car has OEM remote starter and was last used today which works.
-I pulled OBDII codes anyways and does not show logged fault.

Link to video of what happens when the car is turned on:

I would guess that the system took a dump. But first as a test disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes to let things reset. Reconnect battery, start car and see what happens. DD has a 2018 CRV and she had to have her display replaced quite early. Since then, no problems

Disconnect and reconnect the plugs and harnesses that is associated with the radio. You need to access the radio rear compartment to do it. Also +1 on disconnecting and reconnecting the battery for 30 mins.

I disconnected the battery for an hour or so following Donn0128 and datechboss101 advice. The system rebooted and prompted for a reset by holding the Audio Power button for 5 sec.
Everything is back to normal.

If it does happen again, I'll check the electrical connectors at the back to make sure it's firmly in place.

Thanks Donn0128 and datechboss101, you saved me a trip to the dealer and a $160 + tax diagnostic fee.

Minh,

So last week after a long trip the screens went blank again.
Backup camera comes on once in a while, I can't seem to get it to come on consistently by trying different things.
Currently has no HVAC controls other than the hard buttons in the middle, no radio controls and no vehicle settings controls as they are all on the screens.

I have tried the previous trick of disconnecting the battery a few times but it never came back on.
I have also tried pulling out the radio and checking all the connectors at the back, everything looks good.

I guess my next step is to bring it to Acura Dealer and see what they say is wrong.

Any tips or advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Like I mentioned in my earlier post I suspect the infotainment system died. Do some online research I suspect you might find either good used or refurbished units for sale.

Sounds like a bad head unit possibly. I'd take it in for diagnosis and exploratory cost to fix. If not a warranty fix, I'd then take the advice of Donn0128 and search the used/refurb market. Could get pricey otherwise.

Used unit on ebay for $368. But I would still check around and see if I could find a shop that knows how to refurbish them.

I had a hard drive fail in my 2013 RDX when it was 3 years old. That caused a black screen as well and prevented several operations on the radio interface. Acura replaced it on good faith as it was a failure that was rarely seen. They had to order the HDD from the original supplier. Good luck.

All the more reason to take it in to the Acura shop for a look. Sometimes you may think it is out of warranty, and my be. But if it something rarely seen, Acura/Honda will want that part to do some of their own analysis and may good faith the repair. If not, you'll pay the diagnostic fee and go elsewhere if you so desire. Good luck!

Update#3
I just got the call back from Acura dealer (Maple Acura, North of Toronto, ON). The response I got was that the screen is unresponsive so the whole head unit will need to be replaced.
I'm not sure what kind of diagnostic was done, as they didn't even pull out the head unit to check the back of the unit for loose connectors.
When asked about warranty or out of warranty considerations, I'm told that the vehicles is more than 4 years old as it was registered in August of 2016, (Vehicle is a 2017).
If I want to reduce the cost, they suggested looking for a used unit and installing it myself.

Verbal estimate cost of repair is approx. $2500 for the head unit + $1500 core charge.
On top of that is 3 hours labour ($150/ hr) and taxes.

So I'll have to pay the $150 diagnostic fee regardless for the mechanic to turn on the car and report the screen is unresponsive.

All values are in CAD.

I would be willing to bet you can find someone in Canada that can replace the display for you for under $ 200cdn. Start making phone calls. At the very least call local wrecking yards and ask them to track down a good used unit for you.

Did you speak to the Service Manager, maybe ask for the District Service Manager's contact info? Or did you just take it in and get plan for fixing it from the service advisor? An expensive repair on a non-consumable part barely out of warranty is precisely why they have good-faith warranty claims. Head units should not fail inside 5yrs. They should offer to replace the part if say you pay the labour. Can you take it to another shop? I would ask the Service manager no matter the dealer to work with you to get help from Acura Corp.

Or get the parts yourself and see what it takes to do the swap. May not be that bad. $20-$320 for a good trim removal tool set may be all you need to spend beyond parts. The folks that posted the removal video apparently diagnose and repair head units, so maybe they can fix yours. 3hrs of labor for a 10 min removal and 10 min install seems fishy to me. If it were me, I'd do this option.

OP said they pulled out the unit and checked the connections. So it may be just a matter of finding a reasonably priced replacement unit, unless there is some programming needed. Even then, if you install the new unit and is stays on, you can then take it back to the dealership to have them finish the job. You still come out ahead on the head unit if nothing else.

Update #4

After attempting to speak to Acura and the District Managers, these paths lead nowhere. It took awhile to even get a response but I just got the typical response saying the vehicle is out of warranty and there's nothing they can do about it. I think there is a lot of misplaced faith in this forum on Acura willingness to help you out. The dealer took my $150 + tax in diagnostic fee and told me "SCREEN NOT RESPONSIVE, REPLACE UNIT"

Anyways, contacted Alpine, they gave me an address and reference number. I was told that it might take a while due to COVID and international shipping so I waited until the weather was warmer and set the HVAC controls to AUTO at a comfortable temperature before pulling it out and sending it to ALPINE. It took a couple weeks but they got back to me that the solution was to REFLASH ERATO?

Cost was $350 USD with 90 days warranty.

Based on my dealings with Acura and the dealer, I was surprised both GENTEC and ALPINE was pretty responsive and returned my messages promptly
I got the unit back yesterday, installed it and everything is working again.

btw, I'm in Ontario Canada so it took approx 4 weeks in total for shipping and going through GENTEC as their Canadian Rep. It would be a lot faster for someone in the US.

Hopefully this thread will help someone if they come across the same problem.

Everything works again.

Cheers,
