Engine Oil Info

Manual recommends 0W-20 but doesn't seem to require synthetic oil. Does the car come with regular oil but you can use synthetic?

Thanks

Most synthetics are BLENDS of regular oil, anyway.

and then a 0w-20 is supposed to be a synthetic from Honda.
so, it really doesnt matter what oil you put in.

as long as you change the oil and the oil filter regularly according to the MID.
depending on location I would stick with a 5w-30/20 or a 0w-20

Mobil 1 is a good economical choice for a full synthetic oil (no dino).

Given that the car comes with dino oil from factory, what name brand is in compliance with factory oil? I presume most big brands would be... Or should I just bite the bullet and get it from the dealer?

^if most synthetics are blends of dino oil, and a 0w-20 is classified as a synthetic oil, you wont go wrong with any brand named oil.

depending on climate, i would choose a 5w-30 or a 0w-20. at engine temp, those two are basically the same weight.

only their 0w-40 is a full synthetic.

anything else that comes from mobil 1 is a blend.

That is incorrect. All Mobil 1 oils are full synthetic.

The world's leading synthetic motor oil brand, Mobil 1™ is an advanced full synthetic motor oil family that provides performance beyond conventional motor oils.
Specifically, I've been using their 5w30 in my Subaru Impreza WRX for 12 years, and it is a full synthetic:

Mobil 1™ 5W-30 is an advanced full synthetic motor oil designed to keep your engine running like new by providing exceptional wear protection, cleaning power and overall performance. It meets the demanding ILSAC GF-5 performance standards, and is dexos1™ approved by General Motors.
I've just purchased a case of 0w20 for my 2014 MDX, and it too is a full synthetic:

Mobil 1™ 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy synthetic oil is engineered to help improve fuel economy in vehicles where SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20 motor oil is recommended. An advanced full synthetic motor oil, it is designed to help deliver outstanding engine protection and enhanced fuel economy. It meets or exceeds ILSAC GF-5 requirements.

Just did my first oil change. Mobile 1 0W20 all the way. Oh, by the way, the oil filter positioning is one of the worst I've ever had from a Honda product. The end of the filter is 1" or less from a suspension or frame member. Hard to fit a end cap wrench between the two and lots of oil runs directly down on the frame member. Lots of clean up required!

However, this is the only negative I've had with my new '14 MDX. Great vehicle.

Did you jack up the front wheel to get to the filter?
