2017 Acura MDX Parking Sensor Upgrade

About to order Front + Rear Sensor Package. All Acura OEM parts. However, I'm holding off on purchasing their 16 mm hole punch ($71!) for the sensor installation. Far too expensive for a single use need. Looking for the professionally installed look. Any alternatives would be appreciated.

Forgot to mention that my 2017 Acura MDX has the Technology Package installed.

Previously owned a 2002 MDX Touring. 200K miles and 18 years later, it finally died (not really, but it's tranny is stuck in reverse!?!?!). I thought it was time to move on.

For those considering this upgrade, I confirmed with an Acura dealership that both audible and visual (!) indicators will work. This will be cool.

I have parking sensors installed on our 2017 MDX Sport Hybrid Tech. Dealer did installation. Look and works just like Advanced model. Yes, visual and audio beeping will work.

Hey jdpdata.
Thanks for confirming. I'm capable of installing this upgrade myself but still looking for cheaper option for one item needed. Do you know of anyone that has the 16 mm hole punch needed for the installation of the rear sensors? I'd be willing to buy or rent.

Thanks. I found that another member has done this same installation and I'm checking with him if he used this OEM punch or used a different method.

It's not as OEm friendly, but I installed front and rear parking sensors on my 2008 Acura TL-S for a total of 8 sensors front and rear for $40. Now, granted, that they only beep, but still. I got the parking sensor system from Amazon and had the sensors colored matched to the car.

Very cool to have them on a 2008! For things like this, I always go with OEM for full compliance and interoperability of existing system (i.e. computer).

Another thing to consider, if you let dealer install it, they will include 12 months factory warranty. If you do it yourself you may save a few hundred bucks but if something goes wrong, you're on your own. I got mine installed for $1000 p&l, another member got quoted $1200 parts and labor. Not bad at all.

Appreciate the advice. I'm a well-seasoned car mechanic (and engineer) and always confident in my installs as I will go beyond standard OEM installs (weather proofing, anti-seize,..blah blah blah). Research, research,... As long as I get OEM parts I'll still have warranty on them.

Always appreciate help hand.

Do you have a backup camera? If so why do you need the sensors?

I have 360 degree cameras and front/rear sonic sensors. There are times in winter when road muck covers up the cameras and I have the sensors as back-up in low speed situations. The camera also will not alert you if something is behind you as you move forward or back (kid's toy or even a kid running behind the vehicle). The sensors do come in handy for getting out of really tight parking spaces if you get boxed in by other drivers parallel parking too close to you.

As MrGold has mentioned, sensors are great to warn you of impending bump into something close to the vehicle, My garage is super tight and I rely on the sensors when parking. Acura's backup camera's quality are the worst in the industry IMO. It's absolutely worthless at night or when raining.

Xkill - what did you end up doing? Did you order the kit? If so, what did you do about the 16mm drill bit?

So I did this install recently and instead of the OEM tool, I ordered and used a 16mm forstner drill bit. I would start on the inside of the bumper with a pilot hole and go halfway with the 16mm bit then move to the outside/painted side.
I only drilled from the inside of the bumper and there was a little tearout on the front of the bumper after the hole was drilled out. That's the only process of the install I would redo. Still looks good but I'm pretty OCD and wanted it perfect.
