TSB: 2009 6MT (Burning Oil)
Hi all, I haven't had the time to post this, but if you've got a 2009 and it's burning oil like mad, there's a TSB.
My 2009 6MT was burning oil; like crazy to the tune of 6-8 litres per 5000km (or more.
If this is the case, have a talk with your service guy. Here in Canada, I reported this two years ago and they were very skeptical. We did an oil consumption test (required me taking my car into the dealership every x kilometers for a few months).
Once confirmed my car was taken in for about 2 weeks. There was a factory engine reflash. Pistons replaced and a few other items. Quite a big job.
The car has not burned oil since. My powertrain warranty was extended from 4 years to 7 and my car's warranty from 80,000km to 160,000km.
I would strongly suggest having this checked if you have a 6MT. My dealer is the largest in the Toronto area and to date it has been very rare. They have performed this on 2 other cars.
My car is running perfect -- hasn't burned oil since the original repair back in December.

That's a good question! My guys in service said it was specifically a 2009 6MT problem and was fixed for later years. They also said it was super rare because a very limited number of 2009s were sold up here (Honda pulled back on MFG due to recession) -- and -- of those only a tiny fraction were 6MT.
It wouldn't hurt to check in with service, but, I'm assuming you're good based on all the feedback I received.

Ugh. Glad I just came across this.
I legit almost ran out of oil. I just bought this car certified used, with 49k miles, in January. The car now has just over 51k.
When I brought it to the dealer they looked surprised and then the manager said "is it a manual," and when I replied "yes" they said that it was a known issue but that there was a software update already completed on the car in order to help the issue. Clearly, it didn't work.
Maybe I will print this out and bring it in.

PCM Update ??
Does this have anything to do with the PCM update ? I thought PCM update also adressed burning oil issue.

Acura / Honda K24 Engine Consumes Oil
FYI - I have a 2011 TSX Tech 6MT that has been using oil since new. Was 1 quart to 2000 miles and at 22000 is now 1 quart per 1200 miles. The local Acura rep is towing the company line that anything less than 1 quart per 1000 miles is completely normal. The dealer is trying to persuade Acura to do something but, they said that if they do anything then they are admitting to a problem and if they do not fix it the car would qualify for the Lemon Law. This is a sad situation that Honda is stating using a quart of oil every 1000 miles is acceptable for a new car in warranty. The problem is not just TSX K24 but also Civic SI with the same engine.
Since PCM Update
Before the PCM update I somtimes noticed that I had to add 1L of oil before my scheduled regular 5000 KM oil change.
Since the update I can go 5-7000 KM without adding oil and the dipstick reading is right in the middle of the 2 dots at the end of that oil run.
I have 107,000 KM on my 09 and the issue seems to have been resolved for now and for the most part shift at between 3-4000 RPM.
I would suggest you keep after the dealer,
best of luck.

I'm located in Toronto as well and I'm having the exact same issue that you had but with my 2012 TSX, which I bought brand new. They've had it in the shop for 3 weeks now replacing parts, testing, more part replacement etc.
Regarding getting your powertrain and vehicle warranties extended, was that an uphill battle? I'm looking for some peace of mind for when I get my car back and it seems as though what you got was fair.
Thanks!
I have a 09 with a 6 speed. My car started burning a lot of oil. I took my car in and we did the consumption test. I dropped my car off today and a couple hours later the tech guy called and told me they have to replace the pistons and the piston rings. I have 54k miles on my car and all I can say is I'm so glad I bought the extended warranty.
I'll chime in.
Purchased a new 2012 6mt a couple years ago and immediately noticed the burning oil issue. After confirming the issue w/ my local dealer (2 visits to service with the same story of 1 qt burning every 1k miles) they made the decision to change out the piston rings and pistons.
2k miles later, engine was sounding horrible and idling at a very high rpm ~1900. Took it back to the dealer, they kept the car for a week and they decided to replace the ENTIRE engine. So, car stayed a few more days and came back with a brand spanking new engine. Car now has 20k miles and runs like a dream.
