Small nick in windshield

How big does a nick need to be before it needs to be repaired? Its about (maybe slightly smaller) than a ballpoint pen tip and has a white texture to it. You can feel it but its not to deep so I doubt it needs or could even be repaired. I'm just so pissed because its in on the driver side just down to the left of my line of sight. I know no repair will make it invisible but I'm asking because I heard it has to.be deeper in order to repair it so.the resin can form.

In most states the comprehensive insurance will pay for a repair without a deductible and without an increase in rates.

The easiest way to find out is to call a Safelite dealer and ask them if repairs are covered by insurance. You'll want to get it fixed asap as it will enlarge. As you continue driving, dirt and water will ender the crater and will look worse and worse. Changes in temps may cause it to crack.

Do it now.

On my old car I got a rock chip on my windshield that left a little star. Called the insurance that day and a few days later on a Saturday afternoon they had a guy come out to my house to fix it. All that was left was a tiny pinpoint dot. The crack gets filled in with stuff and becomes invisible.

I wasn't sure because the nick isn't that big and a little bit of research told me it couldn't be filled. However, I took all of your advice and called Safelite and they're coming out to my house tomorrow between 12-5 and will fill it if needed. The person on the phone said any chip is able to be filled for the most part so it's worth the time. All State is covering it at no charge to me so why not?

Yeah, its free so why not. Actually now that I think about it, I had about 3 very small chips fixed also on my old car. They put some sort of sealer over it to keep it from spreading. There were no cracks yet, just a very small dimple where the rock had hit. Could barley see the spec where it was but the sealer was crystal clear. They'll fix everything up for you no problem.

I guess they can fill in very small ones as long as you can feel it than. I've seen small ones that are "shiny" in a way but so small you could barely feel them. That was on my Civic so I never worried about it as it was minor. The fact that I could stick part of a ballpoint tip in here tells me it's worse.

the shiny ones you were talking about is likely pitting in the glass, different from rockchips and wont spread or form cracks, just looks bad and is annoying to look at cause of the glare. more common up north cause of the salt on the roads in the winter

I know what you're talking about, but I was referring to actual nicks. I have a ton of those pits on my windshield from the elements and I've learned to deal with them. I'm still working on dealing with actual nicks though. I've had such small ones that were there but nearly impossible to feel except for a slight bump.

As for this one, SafeLite came out and determined it was too small to fill. Guaranteed this would not expand so I'm happy. I figured it was better safe than sorry as this is the biggest chip I've ever had but I thought it was to small. He told me they would have to damage the windshield more and dig deeper just to put the Resin in there. No thank you.
