Rattling under the front passenger seat

I have the most annoying rattle that is under the front passenger seat... sounds like metal hitting plastic... I've tried to track down this sound by feeling around for loose parts while driving (i know i know, its unsafe) ... and just when I think I've located the rattle, it sounds off again, over slight / small bumps in the road.

I've tried researching this on the forums and cannot find anything...

Anyone with a similar problem?

Oh man, I feel your pain, I don't have any advice. I had a 2000 BMW that had this same problem, and I tried to figure it out while driving, never could find it. It drove me insane!!

Hey 240sxer, the rattling sounds like its exactly inside the cabin, directly under the passenger front seat... i want to say its gotta be of those plastic pieces knocking against a metal part under the seat... the sound is RIGHT there... but its very difficult to pinpoint where exactly it is...

I am fairly sure that it is the same sound that has been annoying me. To me it sounds more that it is coming from the passenger door around the speaker.

Thank goodness i'm not the only one. I am in the same boat as tcmengineer. It sounds like the noise is coming from the passenger door area. I can't pinpoint it exactly, but it's getting on my nerves. If anyone figures out what it is, please let me know.

I'm hearing a creaking noise coming from either the brakes or somewhere in the front underbody of the car when I first accelerate or come to a stop or even drive up a slightly inclined road.

I'm also experiencing the exact same problem, but it doesn't happen all the time. Does anybody know the cause?

looks like some noob questions here but they are definitely right in their questioning. The sound is a slight "cracking" sound, particularly when hitting bumps in the road at low speeds and when stopping and starting. The sound is most audible from the driver's point of view. I think it has to do with the car's body sway and/or shocks, but it truly is annoying!

my .02 cents...

soooo annoying.... i think i almost leaped outta my car for a tuck and roll, while the car was driving, this morning....

I think I've pin pointed the vicinity of the sound... its by the seat belt clicker / metal frame holding it up... its below that, like inside the seat... when placing my hand and fingers in one of those metal pieces, you feel something hitting it, and it can't be reached.

awful... completely awful.

thanks ressling, i have printed it up, and will bring it to my dealership this saturday for my appointment ( for my windshield side molding coming off!!!)

but i am thinking that it is not this issue of TSB 09-019.. you know how i know? because when i punch the passenger side seat from the driverside seat, i hear my infamous rattle.. its clearly coming from beneath / inside the passenger seat / mechanism.

i have a slight case of OCD with my car, and this is literally making me go crazy. i dont want to tell myself that i overpaid for this car, but sometimes i think i did.

My '09 Accord Euro was making a weird noise from the back each time I moved off for just a few feet at really slow speeds, like in traffic ... turned out to be the inertia moving fuel around the tank!

The little silver handle thing on the cup-holder cover buzzes like crazy on rough surfaces. It's very slightly loose but I can't work out how to get the lid off to tighten it. At the moment it's got tape stuck over it

Rattling under front seat

Have you tried having someone else drive your car with the radio off while you sit in the back seat and listen?

I'm totally with you on that one. One of the reasons I'm glad I leased. However, I do love the car and want to fix some of the problems!

found the rattle.... it is coming from the passenger plastic seat belt console that is attached to the seat... coming from beneath the seat. when the plastic console is pulled towards myself, towards the driver seat, it doesn't rattle. so i had to put a rolled up sock, wedged in between the seat and the seat belt thing to prevent the rattle.

the dealership said everything seemed fine and that nothing was broken.

sucks.... i guess now ill have to have that stupid rolled up sock there...

ughhh... sound is getting worse. the metal piece under the seat must be getting loose.. unfortunately there is really no access to it without knowing the assembly of the passenger seat and the proper tools....

anyone have this same problem yet?

When I close my passenger door ,I always hear a squeal and believe it is the same one that I hear going over a small bumps or those little light reflectors on the road. It has to be a metal peaces hitting each other. It could be the door or door look. I'm not sure if it is the seat or around the seat belt adjuster. It is definitely a squeal and it is the same one I hear only when I close the door.
I've got a feeling that ,could be eventually around the passenger door speaker!
I don't know , I live in Florida and don't want to imagine ,how the car would sound if I drive it in Chicago.

I have the same rattle. I would say it coming from the passenger seat area. The rattle goes away when my wife is in the passenger seat. I have not had a chance to track it down yet. Hate to take to the dealer for sure a minor concern. In 30,000km, this is the ONLY problem I have had.

I may have had the same issue and it ended up being the bottom seat frame mechanism. Does it not make a sound when someone is sitting in it? Does it stop if you move the seat all the way forward? If yes to both, it is most likely the seat frame mechanism. They ordered and replaced it and my rattle went away.

My wife's car had a rattle coming from the front passenger seat and they had to replace the entire seat. There was no way to tighten it. Crazy design if you ask me. Not sure if this is the same problem you are having.

I haven't had any seat problems with my car at all.

exactly. my seat does NOT rattle when someone is sitting in it. Do you think if I print this forum discussion and bring it in, they will help me better than a "sorry sir, we couldn't find anything wrong."

^^^^ you may have been the one that e-mailed me, but if not, the seat frame mechanisim is part # 81126-TL2-A01. It was replaced last April and the problem never came back. Good luck!

I have the same exact problem with my 2010 TSX. I can't pinpoint the location of the noise. I have to hit the seat. It sounds like it is coming from the lower back area or underneath. It sounds like metal hitting plastic. It's so annoying. I have had so many problems with my car and I've taken it to three different dealers and no one wants to look at it if its just a rattle, but its driving me insane. Were you able to resolve your problem?

Exact same issue for me on my 09. It has been driving me nuts for the longest time.

I would have guessed it was from the speaker area on the passenger door, but I'll give the seat a look. I'm glad I found this.

I have the same problem in my 2010 tsx!! It happens intermittently and I can't reproduce the problem. Sometimes the rattling is noticeable on a smooth drive, but not on a bumpy road (I66 in N. VA).
I am thinking of how to address this at the dealership. Any help is appreciated.

I am having sim sounds on my 2011 TSX. I first thought it was the seatbelt hitting the door but I clipped the seatbelt together and still had the sound. Took it into the dealer and had the shop foreman sit in the seat and the sound didnt happen with him in the car.

Happens usually when I am slowing down but can happen just driving on a smooth road.

My 2010 V6 started developing this issue, and I was not able to trace it back to a specific part of the front seat. Can anyone who had this fixed post an update? I am hoping that there is another solution than having the seat frame replaced! Thanks!

I just picked up a 2009 TSX with very low miles for my wife and it has the same issue, maybe even louder than my 2011. It might just be a common issue with the "floating" seat?????

I could be wrong but I think that this sound is coming from the power seat switches. I have heard it on both sides over certain bumps or at some engine RPM's. I stopped it by grabbing them. I haven't figured out how to permanently stop it but I am pretty sure they are the source. I'm still trying brainstorm through that.

Old thread, but when I took delivery 8/24/2008 the inboard bolts or nuts that held the passenger seat frame to the floor pan weren't even tightened down, I could feel 1/4" space under the bolt where it wasn't tight.

Update: I managed so far to get rid of the rattle noise when I shove a piece of thick foam (about 3 inches thick by 8 inches long) between the center console and the side of the seat, just forward of the seat belt buckle. The foam does not touch the buckle, so it does not appear to be the source.

This weekend, I will check the torque of the seat bolts... I saw in another forum that honda changed the seal bolt torque settings for the honda fit to address seat rattle. I will report back here.

Update:

So I took the passenger seat out to investigate. Here's what I did, and in my car, appeared (so far) to have solved the problem.

Summary: I unbolted the left side seat frame from the track and added some foam and tape underneath it.
I also took the opportunity to properly tie anything that is likely to make noise (wires etc.) under the seat, including putting foam around the seat heater relays.

Details with pics:

<Insert usual disclaimer here re: airbags, seat position sensors etc. You need to disconnect the battery before doing anything. Careful not to scratch the dash or sills etc. >

Here's a view of the general area:

Detail of where I added foam:

More details:

I torqued the seat bolts to 36 ft.lbs instead of the service manual's 30.

Oh, almost forgot: some very sharp parts... make sure you have band-aids around or be extra careful.

I just got the 2011 tsx and i have been hearing the same irritating noise, sounds like a clicking sound, i thought it was coming from the passenger side door, but myb its the seat. Its soo annoying I cant even stand driving the car anymore. And I dont think i can take apart my seat without breaking it, so ill have to see what the dealership say....Never buying a tsx again!!

Try shoving a thick piece of foam or a towel between the console and the seat, enough to put some pressure on the side of the seat. If the noise is gone, this may be it.

Once it's fixed, you will love your TSX again. One fellow here had the whole seat frame replaced and issue solved.

I have seen many luxury cars having serious mechanical and electrical problems right off the lot or withing the first year. I'm thinking of a German brand who's logo resembles the Olympic one... Try cracked engine block at 20K miles.
