Murphy's Law - Map Light Gone Wrong
Murphy's Law - Map Light Gone Wrong
So I am the definition of Murphy's Law. Got my LED interior kit from Warden_JP after some delay because of my own oversight. Needless to say after waiting 5 weeks to get the lights I wanted to put them in right away.
Followed a few others 'guides' on here and install was a breeze. Doors looked fine, license plate light looked good, trunk looked good, interior lights.... well, lets just say I got a small magic show.
Passenger side map light puffed out some smoke so I quickly shit myself, popped the hood and removed the fuse. Fuse was most definately blown so I removed JUST the two map light LED bulbs and replaced them with the two stock map light bulbs. The driver side one came on but not the passenger side. Figured it 'could' be the bulb so I used the one from the rear overhead and nada.
My initial thought and/or hope is that when the LED light on the passenger side was smoking it somehow got hot enough to burn our some of the wiring and or the solder that is connected there... any thoughts/ideas/experiences/help is appreciated. I wont be looking at this until the morning or the weekend at the latest, TYAIA

the drivers and passengers side runs on two diff fuses i believe. uninstall ALL LED's, reinstall oem bulbs, bring to dealer and play dumb. they will likely take care of it. put the fuse back. or try putting in a new fuse yourself? i dunno bout smoke, but i know a few members have blown the fuse/socket while installing and they did what i just said
Will do, I notided the passenger side rear door light is no longer on either but those are the only two that ar not working.
BUT, now I'm even more worried. As the wife and I were heading to the gym I noticed the check engine light had come on and the (i) icon was lit up. The HUD stated to 'check emission system'
I pulled some random fuses during my quest to find the one for the map lights including
Driver Side Fuse Box
5,6,8,18
Passenger Side Fuse Box
6
Engine Fuse Box
6 (I think)

Check Fuse # 16 under-hood. (Ceiling light, ign key light, indiv map lights, rear doors courtesy lights, trunk light and vanity mirror lights).
If one of these lights is not affected, then it's not that fuse, and probably the MICU (not sure exactly what the acronym is but basically it's a specialized control module).
Passenger-side fuse box's Fuses No. 1, 2 3 and 4 relate to the Passenger MICU, so I would check each of them.
If it's not a fuse then you blew a MICS... Procedure for repair is outlined in post #2 by PyroDave

Guess she'll be going back to the dealer on Monday.

Well I'd be more than glad to 'change a fuse' myself but I havent had the time to find my MICU or to even investigate whether or not I can do it. I'll update the thread as soon as I know something more
if your car ends up with a electrical issue, it could be attributed to the LEDs. that's to say, if the technician is truthful and knowledgeable, he can tell u what caused any issue and how to fix it, if he's not he could just see the upgraded lights, claim that it was a defective bulb or defective install or whatever and void that particular warranty issue. if there was something wrong with your gas pedal, there should be no way it can be blamed on your LEDs but who knows. stealerships are called that for a reason.

Clearly, the dealership will refuse warranty repairs on the stuff that was replaced, but can also make a legitimate case for all lighting issues. Finally, depending in the issue, they can make a case for denying warrant repairs for anything electrical.
The systems on today's cars are all inter-related and messing with one part may affect another.
On another board, we played the "Six degrees of Kevin Bacon" to tie virtually any mod to any failure. I think the most inventive was a powertrain fault caused by aftermarket tire valve caps.
Most dealers are pretty good when it comes to diagnosing issues and attributing faults but some have been burned by people reversing a mod and customers "playing it dumb."
Those dealers are far more likely to deny warranty claims once they've been faced with warranty fraud.
Make no mistake about it - if you broke it, then you should be on the hook to fix it - covering up a mod to get warranty repairs is warranty fraud. That's a crime in all states.
You'll note that I never said "voiding the warranty." Very few mods will "void" the entire warranty. The mod(s) would have to affect virtually every subsystem of the car but a major electrical mod could fall in that category.
What is more likely is that a dealer refuses warranty service on a particular failure because they believe that the failure was caused by the mod.
