Honda Access Interior Light Kit Problem and Fix

Hey All

I just got finished installing the interior accent lights in my 2011 wagon and ran into an issue with the install. The instructions ask for you to tap into a light for power and to hook into the dimming of the interior lights so the accent lights follow. What I found is that the International accord has an ashtray which has a light, where the US cars have the velvety box that clearly states not an ashtray.

It confused me for a bit as I wanted to make sure I was looking at the right thing. The diagram clearly shows 3 plugs at the front of the shifter, but the US cars only have 1, that being the AC adaptor (cigarette lighter for us older guys). The only place I saw 3 plugs was under the center console, but that didn't look right. I ended up calling a friend of mine who is a Honda master tech in hopes that he could read the diagram better than I could. After about 20 minutes we realized that there was no ashtray light.

This was resolved by tapping into the light on the automatic shifter, drivers side, about halfway between the top and bottom. This resolved the issue and allowed the lights to light and dim with the dash board lights. It didn't change much as to length and running of the wires.

If anyone tries to install these I am more than willing to give advice and support. I have an auto, and the manual would not have the light on the shifter so for manual guys I don't know. Again, willing to help in any way I can.

Thanks all!

Anytime! And don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. I have a few more Euro or JDM mods lined up and as I do them and run into issues I will post here.

Thanks for the post!

Which part number did you use?

Was it this item: http://www.bernardiparts.com/Honda-I...-TA0-110A.aspx

I have a 2009 sedan, so I'm assuming this accord part will work. I didn't see anything in the install instructions about tapping into a light.

So is the difference between the part I listed and those that the JDM one includes the rear? And a different harness?

The ones you listed are for the 2011+ Accord and only include two lights. And they mount in different locations (under the front lower panels by the glove box and by the coinbox) whereas the TSX Access parts mount in the little cubbies on the center column by the shifter and in the back on the armrest bit.

Harnesses will be different and brackets will be different.

Although, the Accord one you listed comes with a cutoff switch so that you can turn them off completely or have them come on with the light stalk control. Which is an interesting option... You could probably make the Accord ones work if you're handy with wiring.

I guess that also means OP's problem applies here, since the harness apparently doesn't accommodate the USDM.

I think the harness problem would be even more explicit with that 2011+ US Accord kit since the wire harness is meant to take power from the VSA switch area (lower left of the steering wheel) and then splits off to power the lights under the steering wheel and under the glove box. Imagine the harness runs right across the firewall area from side to side.

If you wanted to install the lights in the center-stack cubby on the TSX, that harness won't work. You might be able to chop and make it work though.

And if you wanted to install the lights in the same general area as the Accord, I have no idea on wiring. But they'd effectively be duplicating the footwell lighting that the TSX already has so that seems pretty moot.

You can actually check out the install instructions at the Bernardi site to get a better feel what I'm babbling about:

And if you're just chopping it up and customizing, it would probably make more sense to start from scratch with some LEDs and wiring rather than trying to retrofit the Accord kit.

Although the little ambient lighting on/off switch is pretty keen in an oddball OEM sort of way.

I did see the install guide from Bernardi, and that is what made it seem like the 2011+ Accord harness would work. I also noticed there is already a faint blue footwell light in the tsx.

Think you're right though, wiring up something from scratch would likely be easier.

Thanks!
