First dealer visit already. :(

Well that faint metallic rattling sound from my engine has gotten worse. I let the sound go throughout one tank of gas because it was so faint. I was hoping when I refilled the gas tank it would go away, but it didn't, it's now much worse. I can get the engine to make the noise whenever I want.

It occurs when I am going up hill and am pressing the gas just enough to maintain speed without accelerating or decelerating. It also makes the noise for a second or two when I let off the gas pedal completely or right before the tranny changes gears sometimes, but I only hear it going from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd. It seems the sound is much more evident when the engine is under load (i.e. going up hills). It will not make the sound at all if the car is parked. I have tried revving the engine up to 1k, 2k, 3k, 4k, 5k and holding it for a second or two while parked and it purrs like a kitten, but as soon as I take it out on the road it rattles away.

The best I can describe the sound is as an inconsistent metallic rattle. It sounds like something is loose inside the engine rattling around, but it's not a continuous rhythmic sound; it has quiet a bit of randomness to the rattling it makes.

When I spoke with the dealership on the phone this evening they said it sounds like it could be pre-ignition and that there is a possibility I could have a bad knock sensor, but until I bring it in tomorrow they won't know. They are also going to have someone ride with me while I drive so I can make sure they hear what I hear and show them how to reproduce the sound (I just want to make sure I don't get back the same way as I took it in). Sorry for the long post, but with the information I could provide does anyone else agree with the dealer statement? I've never heard what pre-ignition sounds like and it really bugs the crap out of me.

Thanks,
Shaun

Hmmm... I seem to have a similiar sound, upon accelerating - barely last a second I only hear it if the radio is off, and it isn't consistent. I wonder if it's the pinging of the engine, since I only use regular gas.

Yep, the engine compression is very high in these engines and the low octane gas my cause permanent damage. I'm already thinking my engine is damaged and all I've used is BP ultimate since new.

I use 93 and I got about 1600 miles so far. It kinda sounds like a baby shaker for the first few seconds of accelaration and its pretty annoying for a new car, let us know what happens at the dealer maybe there is an issue with something.

Oh I made a typo in my post above... I was actually replying to samwlee and meant to say that "the low octane gas MAY cause permanent damage." Personally I have been using BP 93 since I bought the car.

I just hit 1700 miles today, I didn't notice the sound really until around 1100-1200 miles or so. I put in some octane booster today to see if that would get rid of the problem, and I plan to run this tank of gas out like the dealer said and then fill up with a different brand. This time I'm going with Shell, and if the next tank of gas doesn't alleviate the problem I have an appointment for Monday. I was going to take it in today, but when I told them the problem over the phone they said they really think it's bad gas and it may save me some time if I just run this gas out and try a different station for the next fill-up so...

i work for Nissan and the new gen Altimas had a similar noise and it was just the heat shields on the exhaust rattling, new shield plus a bracket and it was fixed. hopefully yours is something minor like this too.
