Car hard to start in cold weather
Car hard to start in cold weather
Well i have an 09 TSX and i was skeptical about getting it because it is my first 4 cyl car and ive always thought they were toys so stayed clear. So now that i made the dive into 4 cyl engines.. im happy. I love the gas mileage but the car still feels like a toy to me. The battery is no bigger than a motorcycle battery. Anyone else experience the car struggling to start when its colder out? this should not be for a brand new car.
Thanks,
Thanks,
Upgrade the OEM battery and you should have no problems starting. This is my 3rd Chicago winter (single digits the last week) with the original battery. My car sits outside all day at the train station and all night in my driveway so I know the block is ice cold when I start it. I do have to hold the key a 1/2 second longer until it fires up but its no different from starting any other Honda 4cyl in the cold I've owned.
Honda OEM batteries for the 4 cylinder engines are quite small and optimized. I would change it to something like Interstate, and get the biggest one (in terms of CCA) that would physically fit in.
FWIW, I took a look at the 2011 accords, and I noticed that Honda had a larger battery in there (compared to the 2010s).

as long as this is normal for these 4cyl honda engines its fine with me. I had an A6 before my tsx and it had the battery under the back seat and it was as big as the battery in my range rover so i never had a problem starting. This tsx is my first 4 banger and im just not used to it.
My '09 TSX usually hesitates a little first thing in the morning--especially when it's very cold. However, today I went out for lunch and it wouldn't start at all! I had to try 5-6 times before it would turn over. I literally just had it at the dealer for the 30,000 mile service (and had to go back because they broke my glovebox shelf when replacing the cabin air filter). Of course, when I take it in to the dealer on Monday they won't be able to "duplicate the issue," so nothing will be done. I will never buy another Acura.

I hear ya. Having only owned 6 cylinder Nissans before (2 Maximas and a 350z), the cold startup being "normal" was new to me as well....
I have a 09 tech. I never have hard to start issue until I saw this thread yesterday. I have to start 2 -3 times to get car started it this morning. This is a first time since I own the car. What a wonderfull coincident.
MD = Maryland = very cold and snowy right now! (am I right?)
Yep. It is cold here. for past month, It was 20 some dergree at day time. No snow so far.
My TSX always park at garage. I have 98 camry which is parked outside parking space. It always start at first shot regardless.

My i4 tsx tech has been slow to start during this cold weather as well. We had a lot of snow and ice this past week in Atlanta, but my car sits in a parking garage. Regardless, it still is slow to start. It starts on the first turn, but is delayed vs. a start with 50+ degree temps.
My car has been a little hard to start as well. But this past week in the Chicago area, it was -10 at night, and it started. Granted, it was in the garage at night, but after work, it started up, and it was only about 5 degrees. I figured if it started this week, it will start in about anything. I dont know if the hard starting is specific to Hondas. As my wife has an 05 Pilot, and my daughter has an 01 Civic. And they always start like champs. The Acura seems to fight a little more.
