Custom intake?

So I've removed my resonator, mostly for the sound but now I want to actually feel some gains. I've read everything there is about aftermarket CAI and SRI and honestly they are so overpriced for such a simplistic design. So I am wondering if anyone has created a custom CAI. I've already got an idea of how to design this but wanted to see what others have done.

I'm pretty much assuming a straight pipe..then a cone filter at the end...some sockets for the sensors. Seems easy if you have access to a welder/machine shop. But if you're going custom it might cost as much as an off the shelf piece me thinks?

sockets for sensors?? Ive been thinking about just using my stock filter and coming off that with piping to where my resonator was. Maybe adding a small filter to the end for any water that may splash up.

cone filter is a must, maybe you could remove the stock airbox and modify a cone filter to fit into that space onto the stock rubber hosing

Then what? add a a custom downleg from there, as I would have without replacing the original filter? hmmm lots to think about. Cone filter definitely gives a larger surface area. At least the MAF sensor would still be intact.

i think no matter what you do, an intake alone wont give you a significant increase in performance unless its mated with other goodies.

with that said tho, someone on this forum created a custom intake and was flamed by many members. search it up hah

well what ten hp maybe?? really i just wanna little more kick when you step on it. at least by designing your own you save money and if/ when you realize it's not much of a difference you know you saved a shit ton of money from not buying an aftermarket intake.

Oh and the search feature on this website sucks. searching google and typing acurazine behind it yields better and faster results than anything lol

haha I should have rephrased part of that... as a college student I would save a shit ton of money. I could buy like half a book with that much money. plus im mechanical engineering major, i get into these phases where i analyse components and think I can make an equivalent for cheaper haha. I love the DIY stuff.

The part about knowing what I am doing is the most important part haha. I am also wondering if a bypass still works if it is downstream from the filter?? Seems like it would, maybe I should ask the experts that make them lol.

But then again, maybe there would be no point if my filter is still in the same place.

Dude, do you still have your resonator installed. It looks like some of the piping is still in there. Just curious

Yeah if your car is still under warranty and something goes wrong you can just exchange your oem intake really quick b4 you take it back in. That is really weird though that it keeps going off. I am sure if you only changed the filter though you would not have that problem.

The last time it came on.. I just put back the original air box and the light went off on it's own. I notice that it came on 2 during idle and once during acceleration from 0..

^^ man, sounds like there is a compression problem. Maybe your seal isnt tight enough or something. That would def. get annoying though.

what you could do, is instead of making the traditional CAI you have in mind, keep the stock air box on top, drop in an K&N regular air filter. i think at the bottom of the box if your looking at it normally, below the filter, should be a circular opening that goes down to the resonator. use PVC pipe and make it attach to it and you have a CAI.

it's essentially the same concept as the CT Icebox. If you really want it to work even better. dremel out the fog light plastic portion or better yet, take out the entire fog light housing lol.

Being a second bachelors college student, Im broke sort of lol. Want that Intake manifold. I would value that more than an intake.

Basically what you described is what I had in mine. My only concern with that was water entering the system. Haven't come up with anything yet. ( No lie, thought about making a semi filter out of a sham wow at the opening haha but I might have had a few beers when I thought of that idea) As far as the fog light, I like them to much to do surgery on it.

2010tsx... I got no other solution lol. props on the custom made intake though. Other than the CEL, how do you like it??

You should be fine. Your stock filter is sitting on top of the engine bay. I had a CAI in my old TSX driving in SoFL and Orlando heavy summer rains going through half wheel deep water and was still fine. just don't floor it and drive slow when you go through those puddles.

But since its a stock filter, your fine.

Good to know, I will probably be shopping for tubing at home depot, or something here soon. Still looking into the K&N drop in filter you mentioned. can't decide if the $60 will be worth it. Might just buy it anyways for more airflow.
