mp3 player = unsupported format?

I want to give the voice controls in my '11 tech a try, so I transferred my music from a usb drive to a 20gb dell dj mp3 player. when I connect it to the usb port, it:

a. doesn't power up like it would if I connected it to a pc; and
b. gives an error message of "unsupported format."

my music is in mp3 format, and plays fine from the thumb drive. the music was synced to the player with WM7, so I will try to just drag it to the player without syncing.

do I need an ipod? it seems like any usb player should work, but maybe not.

why aren't you just using the usb drive instead of transferring to your mp3 player?

because as far as I can tell, the only way to use the search by voice feature is through an ipod. it's just hard to find an artist with 150 albums on a drive, when you have to start at the beginning (the letter "A") every time.

so you somehow had this idea that a "dell dj mp3 player" is the same as an ipod???!

p.s. the song by voice feature also works with the HDD.

eh? I assumed that because both devices connect and perform similarly, the ability to access the information would be the same. this is obviously a faulty assumption. I'm not sure why an ipod and a regular flash drive would work and a non-apple mp3 player wouldn't. it should at least be seen by the system as a mass storage device.

the hdd is kind of useless in my case, because I don't own any physical cds.

I did, which is why I turned here. why post in a thread in which you clearly can't add any value to?

for anyone else who has the same question, I think I found the answer.

"It’s easy to take your digital music library along for the ride in your TSX. A USB7 connection interfaces with Apple® iPod®8 players and other USB mass storage devices, such as flash drives that contain MP3, WMA6 or AAC music files."

the footnote indicates:

"Currently includes fifth generation or later Apple iPod, and all generations of iPod Nano, iPod Classic, iPod Touch, or iPhone®. iPod® and iPhone® are registered trademarks of Apple Computer, Inc., registered in the U.S. and other
countries."

http://www.acura.com/Features.aspx?m...od_integration

so, it looks like the answer to my question is: certain mp3 players will allow access to the audio system, and certain ipods will allow full intergration (voice control) to the system.

Obviously you still don't know what you are reading, or just not comprehending it.

The manual clearly states that that only the listed iPod models and flash drives with music files work. It does NOT say that mp3 players will allow access to the audio system.

storage devices != music players

this was on the website...the manual wasn't that straightforward. that still doesn't get around my earlier question of why the car doesn't at least see it as windows does...a mass storage device.

regardless, I answered my own question.
