Adding a center channel to the base?

Anyone done it or have any ideas? I just pulled this out of an RDX Tech and it's a direct fit for our cars.

Also where is our amp? / How many channels?

Mounting holes line up exactly and the speaker fits perfectly up against the grille. It's probably the exact same speaker that comes with the tech tsx.

Looks like I can do a bridged stereo setup but I don't know if this will damage the amp.

Or maybe a LOC? I dunno.

Look at the amp. That'll answer your question.

as far as i can tell it's a 4ch amp. front doors and rear deck. so i'll need a loc and a monoblock if i want to install this.

Depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Center channel speakers are more for movies to create a surround sound environment but not audio as it messes with the imaging (sound stage). Some things are better left alone...

Yeah i think i'm still thinking in home theatre audio, where the center very important.

But, in the RDX i was working on the center filled in nicely when it was on vs disabled. big difference. But i'm just gonna leave this one alone, my system sounds fine as is. I'll find something else to do with these 3.5" speakers lol.

A center speaker is used to add effects for home audio. Think of a train coming up behind you left to right. The center speaker better recreates that type of sound.

For general music listening, adding another speaker actually ruins the imaging that was recorded.

We used to fake a center speaker by wiring it between the left and right speakers but attaching only the positive leads. That doesn't work well on modern equipment.

Yeah that's what i had linked in the earlier post. On modern receivers you can do a "phantom center" but in my experience it doesn't work as well as an actual center.

Right. When you wired up an 8 ohm system that way, you ended up with 4 ohm of resistance - something that most amps could handle.

Modern stuff can be as low as 2 ohms - pretty close to a short circuit on its own, so trying to wire in more stuff just causes problems.

I'm one of the early members of the Society of Audio Consultants and I still have my certificate that says:

"Be it known that those shown here have completed an intensive technical course of study dealing with the design features of high fidelity components and or passed a rigid examination. The Society of Audio Consultants deems these individuals qualified both in experience and knowledge to be certified as professional audio consultants"

If I remember correctly it was signed by Leonard Feldman

The stock centre speaker does not sound very good. I had to replace mine with a FaitalPRO. As for adding a centre channel to your base model. The best way to do it is by adding an external processor BitOne, Mosconi or similar products. This way you can control the low frequency to such a small speaker. Don't expect such a small speaker to play good below 300hz on down. If you wire it to your factory amp you will need a first order high pass filters cap to filter out the low frequencies.

You could start by doing it passively (external crossover) so you don't break the bank on something that may or may not tickle your fancy. I myself would place a nice silk/soft dome tweeter in that spot to bring out the voices and dialogue a little better and will balance out the OEM metal dome tweeters. Maybe only plays 2.5 Khz and up...Peerless,Vifa, Seas all come to mind.

Me? No, that was back in the days when I was selling high end audio. That was in the dark ages when Linn Sondek, JBL, AR, McIntosh, Thorens, GAS (Great American Sound) and Harman Kardon ruled the upper consumer market.

Ah the "Golden Era".... I still use vintage gear in my house and car audio because it's just better. The materials and components used was far more superior and just plain beautiful.

I never was a huge fan of Sansui because most of it was consumer grade, but I'm sure that I have some spare parts floating around somewhere - probably a woofer and a midrange or two. They made those funky crystal tweeters that I used in a system I built for a bar.

Ceb is right though.. Unless you plan on watching movies in your whip all the time best way for listening to music is through two solid channels and a sub(s) if you like.. Think about when the music is mixed and created in a studio.. Producers are always listening through two satellites on a two channel setup.. It's the way they intended you to hear... I have the tech package with "said center" speaker and I never have the "Dolby" setting on when listening to music. Kind of a pointless "tech spec" if you ask me.. I will turn it on every once in a blue just to check functionality of the channels switching..

Yeah i gave up on this, i'm totally happy with my current system anyways. anyways adding the speaker will add more weight, and of course you can't have that in a #racecar. lol

Hey, just stumbled upon this thread, and was curious regarding the center speaker your referring to iCrap, the center speaker in the dash? Are you a fellow "non-tech package" car like me? I didn't realize that there wasn't a center speaker in that grille on the dash until after I bought the car.

I've noticed that the audio quality of my TSX isn't nearly as good as my 3G TL-S with the ELS Surround System, which had the center speaker, amongst probably other things. Is there a retrofit to fit those extra speakers from the tech package to the factory unit already in the car? Or is this probably more trouble than its worth?

Sorry, I'm not a big Car Audio Buff, but sure do enjoy some serious audio quality lol. I've compensated in the meantime and tuned my Android Phone with some Audio Enhancements to get my car sounding as close to my TL as possible.

Our base cars only have speakers in the door, and rear deck. The center and rear doors have grilles, but no speakers.

And nope, you can't add them back in easily. You would have to swap out the amp and the head unit.

For better sound quality get some nice speakers for the door and rear deck. Component speakers in the front, coaxial speakers in the rear.

awe bummer. Having those extra speakers would bring so much enhancement.. I'm not totally disappointed with my stock system, it's not bad by any means, a lot better than most other car manufacturers' systems, just looking to increase a little more fidelity.

I'm sure getting some higher quality speakers could help with dynamic range, but is the stock amp going to restrict or bottleneck any speaker enhancements. How many watts does our base system have compared to a tech system? sorry tried to google it and came up empty handed

I dunno exactly how many watts the base amp has. I changed my front door speakers and rear deck speakers and the quality is SO much better.

Nice, what setup did you go with for speakers? I saw another thread with your Nexus 7 rigged in, Looks awesome man. How's that working for you?

Whatever speakers you go with just make sure they are efficient because the stock amp is not good. Distortion will kill any speaker so pay attention to the "sensitivity" rating when you purchase the speakers and I would recommend a silk tweeter to smooth it all out. Just my 2 cents...
