Why Engine Covers?

Anyone know why manufacturers install engine covers? It seems that they started to appear on high-end models back in the late 90's and now you can find them on most entry level luxury models. I don't like them. I want to see my machine naked when I lift the hood. So what exactly are they there for?

Are they suppose to:

a) Keep the Engine clean?
b) Discourage Do-It-Yourselfers?
d) Make the engine bay look techno-cool?
e) Protect against dangling-necktie-decapitation (DND)
f) Hide advanced technology from prying eyes
g) a and b but not d and e and/or maybe f too
h) All or some other combination of the above

Maybe it's for noise suppression of the engine.

i just thought its to "looK" better and protect the engine from dirt and other particles. if you look in the 8th gen accords, i believe there are no engine cover even though we share the k24 engines

It's for aesthetics IMO + TBH modern engines these days aren't exactly sexy looking anymore (Super car engines do not count), back in the day when you popped the hood and saw RB26, 2JZ, B18C, F20 or a 3SGTE they looked fucking sexy, engines now jus look like blobs of shit. Case in point that pathetic excuse Honda/Acura put on the TSX engine as a header/manifold piece...wtf haven't seen that much plastic since I played with Lego

How true. How true. I use to love opening the hood on my '84 Prelude and gawking at the old A18A with its black anodized valve cover and dual-down draft CV carbs and my old '02 TL-S was a thing of beauty with "3.2 VTEC" proudly stamped on a black valve cover with red accent stripes surrounding an Acura logo and all the wire and cables nicely dressed and routed around the engine bay.

I think its there to cover the hot exhaust manifold instead of that metal shield with the HOT warning on it. Any time you put a DO NOT TOUCH warning on anything, some people just gotta touch it.

My 03 Mazda 6 had an engine cover too, so I doubt it's for entry level luxury sedans.

It does look better, and ed, the 8th Generation Honda Accord does come with black engine cover like the JDM/EUDM K24 engines. I switched mine over because it looks better in black vs the silver Acura version.

That's what I'm talking about. The black cover looks sweet.

I just want to point out that the TL's enemy for performance is HEAT.
I'm assuming this is true with the 2G TSX.

take off those silly covers and let your engine breathe cool air!!!

I also like the manly look of an engine rather than the plastic covers.

Engine Covers Are The Devil's Work, this article in Jalopnik sums it up for me. In fact, the TSX V6 (in TL trim) is called out specifically as an example of a "Buck-Rogers-meets-Sally-Sexbot pile of silver love" and that's a good thing, I think, if you have to have engine covers.

So, this is what you see when you lift the hood of your $72K LS 460. The V8 badge is such a nice touch.

Sad but true, in US a Lexus LS 460L cost $72K, in Australia it cost $191K. Move up to LS 600hL Hybrid, US starts @ $113K but in Australia it's $251K.:rippedoff

^ Most of it isn't even tax, just dealer mark up.

Australia is full of brand whores who are quite happy to pay 65k for a pov pack C200 with no GPS etc. and then de-badge the car so everyone can't see they drive the cheapest Merc or they stick a AMG badge onto it.

The plastic intake is lighter[good thing], stays cooler so intake air is cooler[good thing] and has a smoother intake runners for better airflow[yet another good thing]
