Remote Start

I know this has been briefly mentioned, but does anyone know which remote start module can work with the OEM fob?

I heard something about using the OEM key fob but then you lose some functionality like opening the doors, so you would have to use the key. My main thing is not having to use another fob.

If anyone has any info, please let me know.

Quick sidetrack...I'll never forget the neighborhood nitwit who installed a remote start on his *manual transmission* Integra.

He took it to a Midas to have exhaust run, the shop guy fat-fingered the remote and the car was in gear with the e-brake on. All we could do is laugh as the thing continued to try to start itself as it ran straight into the building. Even after hitting a wall, it still was sitting there rur rur rur rur rur into the wall. =)

What dumb ass installs a remote start on a MT without a neutral interlock?

A co-worker used to have a Lincoln Navigator (*shudder*) with a remote start. I guess it somehow slipped into reverse one day while it was idling in a parking lot and drove over an embankment into a bunch of traffic. I wish I could have seen that happen. I probably would have pissed myself.

that does not make sense, how can it slip into reverse? i'm not bashing you or anything, but unless it's a major computer malfunction telling the car to go into reverse, i don't think this is possible.

also, i have remote start in my manual without neutral interlock. I never put my car in gear, i knew it was a bad habit, atleast for me, because i knew i was gonna get alarm with remote start.

I would imagine that in order to install certain remote start systems that the brake pedal switch that controls the neutral safety switch and usually a gate lockout on the shifter itself would have to be defeated. If so, if the shifter is a cable type connected to the trans, the pawl inside the trans could (and has before) slip from P to R from the vibration and movement of the engine idling.

Well, in this case, the original shop guy was told about it, ignored it, and then gave the keys to the next schleppie who knew nothing about it and pressed the remote accidentally. So it wouldn't have mattered what the owner did in that scenario. To each their own.

I know people put remote starts in manual transmissions all the time. A lot of the kits have an optional switch dealy that makes sure the transmission is in neutral before it tries to start the car. I've known people who have gone without it, I just don't think it's a great idea. I didn't mean that to sound so much like a personal attack on any one who would. Sorry if I stepped on any toes.

As for the thing with the Navigator, it happened well before I worked there so I only know the story I've been told. Somehow the property owner of the office complex ended up paying for it (through insurance) though. They also built up a bigger embankment between the lot and the road.
