Plasti-Dipping grill

Plasti-dipping TSX.

I'll be attempting to Plasti-Dip the front grille next Friday, any suggestions or tips for a newbie? This is the first time I'll be doing something like this.

I did mine

I took off the whole bumper (not necessary). spend the time to mask and clean it properly. I think it would look better paint matched, but oh well.

I dipped my whole grill except for the Acura logo. Took off the bumper, separated the grill piece from the bumper, washed and masked the logo and painted it.

its arts and crafts time!!!!

if you ever held a spray paint can, you'll get the hang of plastidip quick.
it takes a little bit of learning, learning the characteristics of plastidip and how it comes out of the spray can, but with one or two passes you'll pick it up quick.

dipyourcar on youtube has a good video on prep and how to do it. Don't forget to cover the area behind the grille. When masking leave a 1/4 inch space around the grille exposed. trust me it'll come out better. The video should explain this if you can find it

Dip

Just watch the video once or twice, then go straight to it, MAKE SURE TO COVER UP PARTS YOU DO NOT WANT TO PAINT.. Even tho it is plasti-dip and it will peel off I don't think you want to be peeling off over spray..

Start out with a nice light coat. Let it dry for about 15 minutes. then go into the second coat make this a bit thicker but still a bit light. Let it dry for about 15 minutes. Then go in for the third coat and make this one THICK WITH COMPLETE COVERAGE! Enjoy!

i highly recommend getting the glossifier too, it makes a huge difference, its just like the plasti dip paint so make sure to get some good coats on it. really makes it pop and match with the black finish of the vehicle once the weather stops being crappy out here ill post pics of mine.

Yeah i did remove the wheels. I didn't remove the first one and it was a pain in the ass. Removed the rest and it was easier.

I'm still not set. I think the silver grill looks classy but the matte black grill looks a bit "rough". Will it look odd if I don't pastidip the chrome window sills? Think I may plastidip the emblems first to see if it looks good.

Is your car black?

Don't do the chrome window sills... imo the car looks good with the "beak" part of the grille left chrome along with the window sills and door handles. The lip around the grille though i think looks better in black.

For the lip around the grille, i think it would look better in gloss black. But the plastdip is not totally matt (actually it gets a nice permanent shine with a little bit of armor-all). I may try vinyl wrapping mine next.

Yes, my car is black. I think I may try plasti-dipping the chrome trim around the grill like you said.

Hmm...
Had my TSX since October of last year and have been very reluctant to post any dipping projects here.
Guess I'll share my ride:

Dipped roof with matte black and glossifier.
Plasti-Dipping grill-car011.jpg

Dipped the hood.
Plasti-Dipping grill-car024.jpg

Dipped the front fascia.

Removed dip on roof and around chrome area on grill.

A friend of mine lent me his sprayer to dip large areas. I bought gallons of dip from dipyourcar.com

You can buy spray cans/rattle cans from home-depot, walmart, pepboys, etc. but know that their color options are very limited. I believe they carry certain blaze colors like green and orange. The matte colors are black, white, red and gray (gun metal). Some carry glossifier. Cans are best used for smaller project like badges, emblems, wheels etc.

If you plan on dipping large areas like the roof/hood of a car, I highly suggest using a sprayer and buying the gallons.

If you're really interested, check out the dipyourcar forums. There's a wealth of information there.

dipyourcar.com has the best prices and great service! Fonzi has some excellent tutorial videos too. I dipped my chrome trim but need to redo it this weekend as it was my first try and didn't come out very well.
