Ouch, bumper got scratched
Ouch, bumper got scratched
Someone in my office building decided to play bumper cars in the garage and here is the result:

She asked me if I could bypass insurance and just pay me back for the repairs. To be honest I'm not feeling too hot about a body shop repaint as I'll know it's not brand new and not the same. I've had the car for nearly a year and I haven't had a single bumper scratch until now.
I'm thinking of getting the Aero bumper for $600 and installing it myself (looks pretty easy, and I've removed the front bumper before). In terms of cost, I think it'd be similar to bringing it to a body shop.
I'm impatient and want to get this fixed ASAP, and don't want to go to the body shop to get an estimate, even though I know I should. Anybody care to venture how much it'd cost to fix this at a body shop? Second opinions on getting the Aero bumper?
Argh.

I was rearended (20 days after purchase
) and had to have the rear cover replaced. It was around $750 for the new bumper cover (which you wont need), paint, and labor. I think the bumper cover was around $370.
I have a pearl finish (White) and it cost a little more because it was an extra step in the process..

If it makes you feel any better, I have a huge dent in the side of my car that I got several weeks after I bought it that I still haven't gotten around to fixing yet. Not to mention the small dents on my roof (parked at Costco) that I got the same *weekend* after I bought it.
I'm in a similar situation except i'm swapping out my front bumper.
Getting some estimates I quickly realized going with the aero/sports bumper will be less of a pain in the ass and cost basically the same if not less.
Go with the aero/sports.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. The lady who scratched it agreed to pay $600 for the Aero bumper. I just ordered it and it will be here tomorrow, will put it on after work.
I was expecting the lady to not cooperate (at first she asked me if the scratch was already there!) so this is a relief.
I hope it doesn't look weird with just the Aero in the back!

The siding installers put a nice quarter sized gouge in my bumper, the wanted to settle without contacting insurance. The quote i got from a body shop was $615 but im going to be using that towards areo bumpers. Im thinking front and rear only, not really digging the side skirt but not sure if that will mess up the visual flow of the kit...
I feel like the front bumper alone would be the only way it would look ok. With the front and rear bumpers, I would think that it would look like something is missing from the sides. I guess we would have to actually see it first....
. I would think the areo rear bumper only would look odd.
I was just in a similar predicament. I was just rear-ended on the fwy a couple days ago in stop and go traffic by a solo female driver, and I was about to stop on the side except the damn bitch thought it best to escape in the carpool lane. I was so pissed I tried to chase her but decided best that it wasn't worth hurting myself and everyone else. The impact was hard though surprisingly the damage wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The impact made an imprint of her license plate frame on the bottom part of the bumper and the right side red reflector popped out and had a slight crack though I was able to pop it back in place. The front part slightly also has a faint imprint of the front of the nose of the car (it was a white Mitsubishi Lancer or Diamante? i think) I was able to wipe away all the black marks with detailer. Guess it's best it was also a white car and not a black or dark car. I've been thinking about doing the aero kit for awhile now and told myself to wait....guess this incident is making me lean towards it. Hope she gets what she deserves!!

I'm glad you kept your cool and didn't continue the chase. At the end of the day, it's just a bumper and can be replaced. It would suck to be injured or worse because of a bumper scratch.
When I was getting upset today I kept trying to tell myself that - I got way more things to be happy about than to be sad about a scratched bumper.
You should have seen the lady who caused the scratch. Completely unfriendly, unapologetic, and all your other typical anti-social mannerisms. I mean, just that right there makes me feel fortunate, that I'm a generally happy dude and she seemed so pathetic. If I had scratched someone's car I'd be sorry and I'd be polite about getting it fixed. I sorta felt sorry for her, know what I mean?
Anyway, sorry to get all philosophical. Glad you're alright.

When you get your bumper installed, can u take pics? I'm curious to see what it looks like with just the back. The website doesn't really show it well IMO. BTW does your car have splashguards? The back aero bumper isn't compatible with them and I know the car would look weird with just front splashguards! lol
Bummer about the bumper scratch. Someone beat up mine similarly (though through all the paint, I think - down to the black underneath) when I was parked on the street and they just drove off.
ElkGrove - too bad that car didn't make an impression of its license plate *number,* instead of just the plate frame! Would be hard to dispute that!

I'd do the aero bumper front or rear in a New York second as opposed to Billybob's 1/2 ass fuzzy paint match.
You'll still be able to tell under fluorescent lighting, but you probably have that now considering the different substrate between the fender and bumper cover.
You can repair *everything* but the memory.

I miss my old car...
QFT.
I installed the rear Aero bumper today and it went well. Took me exactly an hour. It's amazing how every screw, bolt, clip, etc. fits where it's supposed to, definitely a testament to the design engineers.
Still... I liked my car the way it was and right now I'm not sure whether I like the new bumper. It's certainly different.
When I get a chance I'll take some side shots so you guys can see what it looks like with just the rear portion of the Aero kit. IMHO from any other angle, it doesn't make a difference. Viewed from the back, looks like I have the full kit. Viewed from the front, looks like I don't. Ha!

Good work MrOtocinclus, one hour is pretty quick. I want to install the Euro aero kit instead but have to find a cost effective way to get it ship to Canada. (Last quote was US$1800 for s/h due to the bulk size).
Easiest was is just to get the Acura rear (modulo). I just got into the same predicament, and the good part about it is factory paint, it will outlast any paint from a local body shop..just pop off the old bumper one, and install the new one on. There are adapters that accounts for the flare. It took about 1/2 hour, a total DIY job. I'm going to post some pictures in a new thread.
Haha, oops, I replied to your thread before viewing this one... anyway, I agree that it's much better to have factory matched paint as opposed to body shop paint.
I wish the front bumper was as easy to install. It requires drilling and hole-saw-ing, which I'm not sure I can do. If I can get my hands on the Euro front lip I think I'd be set.

I'll try to take some pics ASAP. I have to admit the new bumper is growing on me... sometimes when I look at it I "forget" that I have a new bumper, which is a good thing.
No, my car does not have splash guards. Initially, I was going to get them but my wife said no, and I'm kinda glad I didn't because of this whole scratched bumper fiasco.

Love your PWP/Parchment combo!
Crappy pics
Sorry guys, I've been super busy so I haven't had time to take some real pics... here are some crappy pics from the installation:

least your neighbor didnt hit your car like mine did.. lucky i caught it on camera http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuOA0a5vl4k
I have grigio also. The same thing happened to me in the exact same spot, just much worse.
Some a-hole side swiped my bumper in that spot, but took the tail light with it, the bumper was hanging off of the clips.
I'm sick of people doing stuff like this and getting away with it.
