Oil change on the TSX

Do you guys go to the dealer to get your oil changed or do you just go to like pennzoil or something and tell them to use mobil1 synthetic oil?

I actually just changed mine yesterday and put in Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Extended Performance 5w-20 with a Mobil 1 M1-110 filter. It was a really easy process and was actually easier than changing the oil on my '04 TSX since the filter location on the new car is way easier to get to. This is for the V6, though, not sure about the 2nd gen 4-cyl models.

I usually end up doing the oil change myself.

i change it myself as well. no sense in letting a dealer or a jiffy lube tooling around under the car and messing something up, or say, washing the car without your permission and leaving swirls on the paint.

the only thing that's annoying with the 2nd gen TSX is the cover that you have to remove, but other than that, it's not bad at all. that said, had i bought my car from a dealer 3 miles away from my house, they would have given me oil changes for life. however, we all know that oil changes for life means that they will find stuff that is magically wrong with the car and ask to repair/replace. no thanks!

wow. $31.95. that is cheap. Here in Gaithersburg, MD they charge $54.95 for regular oil change.

If you've never done it before, I would definitely recommend trying it yourself. The instructions are in the owner's manual and all you really need is a wrench, a jack/ramps, and maybe the oil filter wrench.

I had no experience doing oil changes prior to doing it on my '09 and in terms of getting to know my car better and just learning a new skill, I'd say I was very satisfied with the result.

you can dump the oil at any place that does oil changes. they are required by federal law to accept it as long as their tanks aren't full. places like autozone should take used oil as well, call them first to make sure.

If you don't know how to do it then don't do it. It is better to let the dealer do it and if you don't want them to wash your car just say so lol Every time you change the oil you will have to put this in to the system than says what service you are recquired to do and if you know all of that good luck!

could you bring your own oil (mobile synthetic or w/e) and ask dealer to use those instead? or would they only do it for you wiht their regular ones?

Probably depends on the dealer. My dealer was fine with me bringing my own oil and filter.

I do my own oil changes because Acura and Honda can't seem to get it right. Acura over filled by 500ml twice, even after I brought it to their attention and I just drained over 1 litre of oil from an oil change Honda did.

Scary to think these monkeys are training to be full fledge technicians. WTF. I know they turn a dial and the pump stops automatically at X litres but don't these idiots check to oil level after the car has bee sitting for a while.

Anyway. The 4 banger is dead easy. Pull off the oil pan cover and the filter is right there.

Back with my Prelude, I did on my own, 'cuz of the oil drain and the oil filter layout, it was always messy.
Then to my Accord, I either went to local auto shop, let them do (pay around $30) or I bought Quaker oils, brought them over to the local auto shop, they charged only labor.
I never trust Honda dealers.
Now, with the TSX, in my mind, I would bring it to the Acura dealer for the first 2 or 3 years, then I'll do as had done on my Accord.

Oh, another question for you guys
1. Do you really go with 5W-20 per spec.?
2. When you DIY, have you actually replace the washer every time or not?

I replaced the washer every time (or every other time). They are dirt cheap and sure beats stripping a bolt.

Its simple enough if you have the basic tools and have done an oil change before on another car.

Jack, Pair of Jack Stands and Torque Screw for the drain bolt.

You do not need any special tools for the filter, just put on a rubber glove and use your hand to turn it.

I know how to do an oil change, that is not the question I was answering. I haven't changed oil in the TSX yet, so I haven't looked for where the oil filter is located and how easy it is to replace.

must have misread your posting.... the filter is right in front of the oil pan once you remove the plastic cover under the car.

Jack Stands? Serious? I'm afraid to death.
I was always using ramp when doing oil change, never use stands as I was afraid they would fall, just the feeling.

jack stands won't fall. however, you should never use your jack as a jackstand as they are designed to only lift the car, and not hold it up.

i actually has a bad experience with ramps once. the rubber footing one of them came off, and when i was trying to drive my car up on them, the ramp just shot out from under the car due to the torque of the wheels and got wedged between the ground and my frame. that was scary.

So how did you get the ramp out from under your car?

instead of driving it up the ramp you should have just jack the car up and slide the ramp underneath the tire and then release the jack do that for both sides and you are good to go.

I have a free coupon for a B1 service that expires August 31. My oil life is around 50%. I want to take advantage of the free service and the dealer said they would honor the coupon. Are there any issues with getting the service performed before the maintenance minder goes off and changing the oil this early?

except for the first oil change, (break-in oil), there will be no issues with replacing the oil early.

Umm... Why are ya'll putting synthetic oil in your cars? Regular oil should do just fine, synthetics are better for older, higher milage cars/trucks...

it means there are 6 bottles, 1 quart each. the manual can tell you how much oil you actually need for an oil change. it's something like 4.something quarts

Actually, regular synthetic oil is worse for high mileage, older cars. It is slicker and more likely to leak from older seals. The one high mileage synthetic made for that use I'm sure address that issue and that is why it is made.
