Driver 1 / 2 : How do it know?

So, I've been thinking about the Driver 1 / 2 memory keys to solve a little problem project I've been working with. Before I go start poking around in the car I was wondering if someone might already know the answer (that I didn't find when searching the forums).

What is the feature of the key that tells the car it is Driver 1 or 2?

Is it something in the door lock/unlock transmitter button? or is it merely how you program the positions with the key in the ignition and the 1 / 2 buttons on the door?

For example, I have Key 1 programmed for my settings. Wife has Key 2 programmed for hers. If I wanted to get a third key to use as a backup, could I program a D2 key to work the same as my original Key 1?

Ignore the obvious suggestion of I get both D2 keys and the wife gets the D1 Key, I'm just trying to understand how the guts of the key works fundamentally. I'm pretty sure it's not the RFID chip that controls it but I don't know enough to know how the FCC coded transmitter would distinguish the two positions.

Cheers!
Joe

I don't know but I guess that the unlock signal from the key identifies the driver.

On our RDX, I can unlock the door using my key and the seat will move to my setting. However my wife can start the car with her key and the profile will remain as if it was my key.

It's the key fob's remote that's coded to the driver 1 & driver 2. When you unlock the car with the driver 1 keyfob (remote unlock only), you get the settings associated with driver 1. Unlocking with the other keyfob will get you driver 2 settings. Starting the car has no effect on the settings.

Acura should have embedded the Driver 1 tracking chip into your forearm when you bought the car. If they didn't I would go to your nearest dealership and ask for it.

Okay. That's all pretty much confirming what I thought.

I figured the transmitter is sending along some bit of information that identifies the position. I was *hoping* it had something to do with the "registration" process when you program the key with the door buttons though. I thought it might be a long shot but worth asking about.

I'm taking the car in for service on Friday so I'll ask them about the chip implant then.

My Acura branded hat is semi-reflective on the inside so it might be blocking the signal.

Shouldn't your hat be Honda branded, since you De-Acura'd your wagon?
