Its the VTC Actuator. I had this. It only happened 1 in every 50 starts. I took it into the stealership and told them to look at it. Took them 1 day to get parts and another to install. Free of charge on powertrain warrenty.

Check your alternator on your battery issue. Have a auto parts store check it for free to rule it out.

The issue is that they said it has to make the noise while it's at the dealer. How did you prove it? Or did it do it when you took it in?

I didnt prove it or I got lucky. Ill credit my mehanic at Acura Carland here in atlanta. I think they just helped me out.

He "claimed" he heard it but i think he was hooking me up. Anyway you can try a different dealer? Or just be straight with them. Its warrenty work so Acura will reimburse the dealership so its no cost to them.

Yeah my dealer in an ass. Every rep tells me that acura requires them to reproduce the problem at the dealership.

I doubt they make a recording of it to prove it to acura. Your dealer is an a-hole. Maybe find a recording only and tell them that you recorded it.

So the reason it grinds is that the VTC actuator is draining of oil when the car is off. The grinding you hear is unlubricated VTC actuator trying to work. This is bad. It only lasts a few seconds because it fills back up with oil after a fraction of a second. It could cause some more serious issues down the line as it will wear at an accelerated rate. I know its more than you asked for but you may just have to be relentless and keep bringing it into the dealer until they find it or stop being lazy a-holes. Hopefully they arent charging you a diagnostics fee every time.

Yeah i knew that. That's exactly what i told them i read what was happening and she said it's a TSB meaning she is not required to do it for me. And unless it does it on-site there is nothing she can do because it is "policy."

I gave them the car on friday and it sat until monday... but they called said it didn't do it. I told them to leave it till this friday and hopefully it will grind again and they will fix it. I think they are currently working on diagnosing the parasitic draw issue...

I just passed the factory warranty (50k) but i still have powertrain warranty (70k). also i had them document the issue in the system before warranty is up. I don't know if they will charge a fee but i really hope not.

Leave it overnight on a good cold night make sure they leave it outside not inside
and you had another engine noise that went away a month or two ago didn't you ??
that was most likely the timing chain tensioner get it replaced at the same time even if you have to buy the 60 dollar part just do it trust me on this you don't want it to fail and bend all of your valves

Yeah i did have that noise a while ago.

They left it parked outside friday night to monday morning and it was freezing for that entire time. That's why i don't understand why it didn't make the grinding noise when they started it monday.

I mentioned timing chain to the dealer and they said not needed.... so i really don't know what to do.

Just the tensioner not the chain they have to remove the cover to the tensioner to change the vtc actuator

Just a thought, but wouldnt the oil be more prone to drain out if it were slightly warm? It would be more viscous and drain out quicker. Like when a warm cars oil comes out faster than when it is cold.

Weather here when i got "lucky" was ~75degrees and only sat for one night.

Sounds like they are just being aholes they should want to do the work it pays them 2.2 hours and it takes 45 minutes to do, drive it out to salt lake city and I will hook you up with a good Acura dealer (I work at Honda they wont let me do Acura warranty work)

True but it seems like the colder it is the more we see at my work 3 or 4 a week in the summer 1 or 2 every month

Good luck! It would kill me to have something under warranty that they wont fix.

The thing im worried about is apparently service records do not trasnfer between dealers. and i am past factory warranty but they will still fix this for free under the warranty if the find it. The dealer i go to now can pull up the record and see i was there previously for the issue, but the other's cant. so i don't know if that will cause problems.

Drop the loyalty card. Say that the other dealership was not as understanding and are considering switching (i probably would). Dealerships should have to fight for your loyalty in my opinion...

talk to the service manager(the one in charge of the department) or speak with the GM. tell them you want a print out of all services rendered. then tell them that you are going to another dealership, and don't be afraid to throw around words like Acura Customer Relations, Corporate, Fraud, and lawyer. always fun for shits and giggles when you dont get your way

Tried part of that. Service manager didn't come out even. (they said they paged him)
Said I would call Customer Relations and they were like "go ahead they won't do anything"

But i'll try again on Friday (or whenever i go back). Hopefully i can get them to fix it....

Nothing big planned other than Houston for turkey day and christmas. I will be taking the whole week for christmas so there will be plenty of time for me to get out to a meet if there is one.
