Over Caffeinated
More info please?
Are you talking about sanding them to rough up the existing paint enough for the new paint to adhere? If so, I'd guess (and it's a guess, not experience) 600 grit and wet sanded. If I was doing it without any other guidance, that's how I'd start.
I assume you are not taking them to bare metal? If you go to bare metal, be sure you use a primer - probably self-etching variety.
Hopefully you'll get suggestions from someone with actual experience.

I have dead hookers in
whatever you do DO NOT SAND THE BARE RIM. it is not needed. just buy you some paint prep spray. its like 5 bux at auto parts stores ans spray them real good and then clean it off. then use a good primer. I used the duplicolor ENGINE paint primer. after you prime them use 1000 grit paper to lightly sand. then prime again. then sand again. then apply a light coat of the duplicolor wheel paint. then lightly sand then another coat then sand then another coat until you reach the nice smooth look and the desired amount of coating on your wheels. Make sure that after you sand to wipe them off good. a good thing to use is a TAC cloth also avaliable at the auto store. after the color goes on make sure you put a good clearcoat on them and let them dry really good before trying to mount them. i would let them sit overnight before mounting just so you dont jack anything up. If you have any questions PM me and i will help you out. and post pictures

Grit of paper all depends on how beat up the existing finish is. If its good 220 to 600 will work, along with a good primer. Make sure to wash and degrease the wheels REALLY good before you sand them. Dawn will work good at that. Other wise you can buy a degreaser.

My rims are not beat up at all, they are in very good condition. Just some spots may need sanding!

Assuming the entire wheel is free from curb rash and any scratches you can feel with your fingernail, you can just use a scotchbrite pad to scuff up the surface.
Use Prepclean to clean the wheel REALLY well (prep is key) then prime, then paint,

no, if you sand with a very high grit sandpaper it will not show through, the clear will fill in the micro scratches so u cant see them.
idk if u guys have read my thread about reclearing my scratched stock rims. but i am wondering if just any old spray bottle of clear is ok to use on our stock rims?
now after reading this i might paint mine gun metal
good luck and post some pics.
